Your Ascendant, or Lagna, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the instant you were born. Everything in a Vedic chart is built around it. It sets your houses — the life areas — which is why two people born the same day but a few hours apart can have completely different charts. If you only know your sun sign, you're missing the point the whole chart hinges on.

Vedic astrology reads all three, but weights them differently from Western astrology.
