# The 27 Nakshatras: The Real Vedic Zodiac

Twelve signs are the demo version. The 27 nakshatras are the resolution Vedic astrology actually reads you at.

## Overview

Before the twelve zodiac signs, there were the 27 nakshatras — the lunar mansions the Moon passes through as it circles your chart. Each spans 13°20′ and carries its own deity, symbol, and psychology. Your Moon's nakshatra shapes your instincts and emotional wiring, seeds your entire Vimshottari dasha, and adds a layer of precision the 12-sign zodiac simply can't reach.

## What a nakshatra tells you

Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, a symbol, a deity and a temperament. Your Moon's nakshatra describes how you process emotion and instinct; a planet's nakshatra colours how that planet behaves in your chart. The nakshatra also fixes your birth pada (one of four quarters), which links to the Navamsa (D9) and refines the reading further.

## Why 27 beats 12

Twelve signs sort humanity into twelve boxes. Twenty-seven nakshatras (each with four padas, giving 108 divisions) sort it far finer — which is why two people with the same Moon sign but different nakshatras can feel nothing alike.

## How Supastro calculates this

Positions come from NASA JPL ephemeris data on the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Divisional charts run D1 through D60 and the higher vargas to D150, Ashtakavarga uses the full 337-point bindu system, planetary strength uses Shadbala across all six sources, and Vimshottari dasha is nested five levels deep. Where an unknown birth time makes a conclusion unreliable, Supastro says so rather than guessing.
