# Vimshottari Dasha: The Vedic System That Tells You When

Western astrology tells you who you are. The dasha system tells you when your life's chapters actually open. This is Jyotish's superpower.

## Overview

The Vimshottari dasha is a 120-year planetary timeline, seeded by the exact position of your Moon at birth, that divides your life into chapters — each ruled by a planet. Knowing which Mahadasha (major period) and Antardasha (sub-period) is running right now is the difference between a horoscope that describes your personality and one that tells you the season you're actually in. It's the answer to when, and it's the single most useful thing most people have never had properly read.

## How the dasha timeline works

Your Moon's nakshatra at birth decides which planet rules your first Mahadasha, and how much of it you were born into. From there the nine planetary lords cycle in a fixed order — Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury — each for a set number of years, adding up to 120. Within each Mahadasha, the same nine cycle again as Antardashas, and again as Pratyantar sub-periods, letting you zoom timing down from decades to weeks.

## Sade Sati, returns, and the periods people fear

Most 'scary' astrology — Sade Sati, Saturn return, Rahu periods — is really about dasha and transit timing. And most of it is mis-sold as doom. We took that apart in The Sade Sati Boogeyman: the hard periods are where the real building happens, if you know what they're asking of you.

## Timing without the fear

Supastro computes your dasha to the second and overlays it on your live transits, so you see the current chapter and the windows ahead — without the manufactured panic or the remedy upsell. ## Why timing beats personality

Two people can have near-identical charts and radically different years — because they're in different dashas. The same Saturn that feels crushing in one period becomes a builder in another. Timing, not just placement, is what makes a reading actionable.

## How Supastro calculates this

Positions come from NASA JPL ephemeris data on the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Divisional charts run D1 through D60 and the higher vargas to D150, Ashtakavarga uses the full 337-point bindu system, planetary strength uses Shadbala across all six sources, and Vimshottari dasha is nested five levels deep. Where an unknown birth time makes a conclusion unreliable, Supastro says so rather than guessing.
