# Kundli Matching & Guna Milan: Beyond the 36-Point Score

The 36-point Ashtakoot score is where most matchmaking stops. It's also where most of the truth begins. Here's what a real compatibility reading looks at.

## Overview

Kundli matching (Guna Milan, or Ashtakoot Milan) compares two birth charts to judge marriage compatibility. Its famous output is a score out of 36 points — and that number has decided countless weddings. But treating a single score as a verdict is exactly how good matches get rejected and hard ones get waved through. A real reading goes deeper than the eight kootas.

## What Guna Milan actually measures

The Ashtakoot system scores eight factors (kootas) between the two Moon nakshatras — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi — for a total of 36. Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7 points) carry the most weight and are where most 'low scores' come from. But nakshatra-to-nakshatra scoring is only one lens.

## What the score misses

Real compatibility also needs the 7th house and its lord in both charts, Venus and Mars for attraction and friction, Mangal Dosha handled honestly rather than as a fear-lever, and the couple's dasha timing. We've written about the honest version of chemistry in this Jyotish masterclass on attraction, and about what charts can and can't tell you in Infidelity & Past Lovers.

## The Mangal Dosha fear industry

Few things have been weaponised like 'Manglik' status. Families have paid enormous sums to 'cancel' a dosha that, read properly, was mild or already neutralised. We named this racket directly in The Manglik Wedding Ransom. Supastro reads Mangal Dosha in full context — no fear, no ransom.

## A score is a signal, not a sentence

A 32/36 with a serious Mars affliction can be rockier than an 18/36 with strong 7th-house harmony. The number is a starting point. Anyone who hands you a pass/fail from it alone is doing matchmaking by calculator.

## How Supastro calculates this

Positions come from NASA JPL ephemeris data on the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Divisional charts run D1 through D60 and the higher vargas to D150, Ashtakavarga uses the full 337-point bindu system, planetary strength uses Shadbala across all six sources, and Vimshottari dasha is nested five levels deep. Where an unknown birth time makes a conclusion unreliable, Supastro says so rather than guessing.
