# Sarvashtakavarga (SAV): The Master Strength Map of Your Houses

Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) explained in depth: the 337-bindu master map, house-strength thresholds, the transit modulation formula, kakshya timing, and the Sade Sati mitigation rule.

The Sarvashtakavarga, or SAV, is the master strength map of your chart. It is built by adding together all seven planetary Bhinnashtakavarga maps, so every house ends up with a single number of bindus that tells you, at a glance, how strong that area of life is and how transits through it will actually land.

If you learn only one tool from the whole Ashtakavarga system, make it this one. The SAV turns a chart into a scoreboard of your houses before you interpret a single placement, and it is the single most practical timing instrument the tradition offers.

## The 337-bindu math

Each planet contributes its own bindus to the twelve signs, and those seven maps sum to a fixed total of 337. Spread across twelve houses, that gives an average of roughly 28 bindus per house. The spread itself is the message: it shows where your life flows and where it grinds. The seven planetary totals that build it are Jupiter 56, Mercury 54, Venus 52, Moon 49, Sun 48, Mars 39, and Saturn 39, which add up to exactly 337.

| SAV bindus in a house | How that area of life tends to run |
| --- | --- |
| 32 and above | A genuinely strong, well-supported area |
| 28 to 31 | Solid, around the healthy average |
| 25 to 27 | Workable, but it needs conscious effort |
| 24 and below | A weaker area that struggles without support |

## How to read your houses

Start by ranking your twelve houses from most bindus to fewest. The house holding the most is your most naturally fortunate area, and the one holding the least is where you have to work hardest. It is also worth watching the growth houses, the 3rd, 6th, 10th, and 11th, since bindus concentrated there support effort, resilience, and gain. This ranking is a fast, honest read on the chart before any deeper interpretation begins.

## The transit engine: reading gochara through the SAV

This is where the SAV earns its reputation. Standard transit results, read from the natal Moon, tell you whether a planet passing a house is broadly favourable or not. Ashtakavarga then modulates that raw result by the bindu strength of the sign being transited. Two factors decide the outcome: the benefic or malefic nature of the house from the Moon, and the number of bindus in the transited sign.

| Transit setup | The result |
| --- | --- |
| Favourable house + high bindus | Maximum benefit |
| Favourable house + few or no bindus | The benefit is muted |
| Unfavourable house + high bindus | The difficulty is softened |
| Unfavourable house + no bindus | Maximum difficulty, unmitigated |

There is even a simple strength gauge: divide the bindus in the sign by eight to get a percentage. Four bindus is 50 percent, a genuine balance of good and bad; eight bindus is full strength; zero bindus offers no protection at all. A slow planet like Saturn or Jupiter crossing a high-bindu house tends to give far better results than the same planet crossing a low-bindu one, which is exactly why the same transit blesses one person and grinds another.

## Kakshya: fine timing within a sign

For precision, each sign is divided into eight equal parts of three degrees forty-five minutes each, called kakshyas, ruled in a fixed order by Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, and the Ascendant. The rule is elegant: a transiting planet gives its beneficial results only while it passes through the kakshyas whose rulers contributed a bindu to that sign. This is how a favourable month narrows to a specific run of days, and it is why two people under the same broad transit feel it on different dates.

> **Ashtakavarga can defuse Sade Sati**
>
> Here is the anti-fear headline the internet never mentions. The classical rule is explicit: the difficulty of the seven-and-a-half-year Saturn passage is greatly reduced if the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from your Moon each hold more than 30 bindus in the Sarvashtakavarga. Strong houses turn a dreaded transit into a demanding but survivable rebuild. The scary headline is only half the story.

## Reductions and pindas

For advanced work, the raw SAV is refined through two reduction steps, Trikona Sodhana and Ekadhipatya Sodhana, which strip out redundant counting to produce cleaner totals. Those feed into weighted values called the Rasi and Graha pindas, which classical astrologers combined into the Sodhya Pinda. The tradition uses these for longevity estimation, which we deliberately do not publish. As a strength and prosperity refinement, though, the reductions sharpen exactly which houses carry real, non-redundant support.

## How to read it in your chart

1. Rank your twelve houses by their SAV bindus, strongest to weakest.
2. Treat 30 or more as strong, and 25 or fewer as needing effort.
3. For any slow-planet transit, check the SAV of the house it is entering, then narrow the timing with the kakshyas.
4. Check the 12th, 1st, and 2nd from your Moon for the Sade Sati cushion.
5. Always combine the SAV with the house lord, its occupants, and your running dasha.

## A note on the heavier classical techniques

The classical literature builds longevity and death-timing methods on the reduced SAV and its pindas. We deliberately do not publish those. We read the Sarvashtakavarga as a map of strength, opportunity, and transit quality, which is where its real, everyday usefulness lies.

## FAQ

### What is the Sarvashtakavarga?

It is the sum of all seven planetary Ashtakavarga maps, giving each house a single bindu score. With 337 bindus spread across twelve houses, it is the master strength and transit map of the chart.

### What is a good SAV score for a house?

The average is about 28 bindus. Roughly 30 or more is strong and supportive; around 25 or fewer is weaker and needs effort. Ranking your houses by their scores is the fastest honest read of a chart.

### How does the SAV improve transit reading?

It modulates the standard transit result by the bindus in the sign being crossed. A favourable transit through a high-bindu sign gives maximum benefit; an unfavourable one through an empty sign gives maximum difficulty. The kakshya subdivisions then pinpoint the timing.

### Can the SAV really soften Sade Sati?

Yes, per the classical rule. If the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from your Moon each hold more than 30 SAV bindus, the intensity of the seven-and-a-half-year Saturn passage is significantly reduced.

> No single house, sign, planet, nakshatra, or placement should ever be read in isolation. Authentic Vedic astrology (Jyotisha) is a deep, multi-layered system that weighs hundreds of interacting data points for real accuracy: the Lagna and its lord, the Moon and its nakshatra, the natural and Jaimini Chara karakas, the Arudha padas, planetary strength (Shadbala and Dig Bala), dignity, house ownership, conjunctions and aspects, combustion and retrogression, the avasthas, and Ashtakavarga, all cross-checked across the sixteen divisional charts (Shodasavarga) and timed with the Vimshottari dasha and the current transits. Any one factor only hints at a tendency; the real verdict emerges from how every layer agrees or disagrees with the others. Treat this guide as education, not a personal prediction.
