Burnout in Vedic Astrology: The 6th House, Saturn and the Moon (Push Through or Step Back?)

It is Sunday, seven in the evening, and your chest already knows it is Monday.

You are not lazy. You have been running on reserve for so long that reserve feels normal. Every few months the argument about seventy-hour work weeks comes round again, and a lot of tired people quietly wonder if they are the weak ones. They are not. But they do need to know what kind of tired this is.

One line before anything else. Astrology does not replace a doctor or a therapist. If you are struggling to sleep, eat or function, or you feel hopeless, please see one. In India you can call Tele-MANAS on 14416, free.

What does the 6th house have to do with burnout?

The 6th house is called Ari Bhava, the house of enemies, but its everyday meaning is closer to the grind. Daily work. Routine. Service to others. Competition, deadlines, debt, and the illnesses that come from all of that.

A busy 6th, with malefics there, the 6th lord joined to your ascendant lord, or the ascendant lord sitting in the 6th, often describes the person who takes on the extra task without being asked. That is a real strength. The 6th is an upachaya house; it improves with effort. But the body keeps the receipt. When the 6th is activated by dasha or transit and nothing else in the chart gives you a release, the strength turns into wear.

How do the 10th house and Saturn add load?

The 10th house is your public role and your karma at work. Saturn is load: time, duty, consequence, the weight you carry because someone has to. Put them together and you get the heaviest working years of most lives.

The transits I watch for burnout:

  • Saturn over your natal Moon, the peak of Sade Sati. With Saturn in Pisces since 2025, that is Pisces Moons now, with Aquarius Moons in the setting phase and Aries Moons in the rising phase. Check yours in the free Sade Sati tool.
  • Ashtama Shani, Saturn in the 8th from the Moon: Leo Moons while Saturn is in Pisces, Virgo Moons once Saturn enters Aries on 3 June 2027.
  • Kantaka Shani, Saturn in the 4th from the Moon: Sagittarius Moons now, Capricorn Moons from June 2027. Home stops feeling like rest.
  • Saturn over your 10th or 6th house from the ascendant: more responsibility, heavier bosses, slower results.

Saturn turned retrograde in Pisces on 27 July 2026 and goes direct on 11 December 2026. Retrograde Saturn often brings back old work: the project you thought was finished, the conversation you avoided. None of this is a punishment. As our piece on the subject argues, Sade Sati is not the monster it is sold as, and the full mechanics are in Sade Sati explained. But Saturn asks for structure, and burnout is what happens when you meet Saturn with no structure at all.

A Saturn mahadasha, or a Saturn antardasha inside another period, can carry the same weight for longer.

Why does the Moon decide how fast you burn out?

If Saturn is the load, the Moon is the tank. The Moon is your mind, your mood, your ability to recover overnight. Two people can carry the same Saturn transit and come out very differently, and the difference is usually the Moon.

Check its strength. A waxing Moon, born in the bright half of the month, has more reserve than a waning one. The Moon is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio. In the 6th, 8th or 12th house it feels everything more. Then check its nakshatra. A Moon in a Saturn-ruled nakshatra (Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada) carries duty well and often forgets to stop. A Moon in a Mars-ruled one (Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta) runs hot. A Moon in a Rahu-ruled one (Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha) is restless and finds it hard to switch off.

Is Mars running you into the ground?

Mars is fuel and fight. Mars in the 6th or 10th makes a fierce worker who wins the battle and forgets to eat. Mars joined with or aspected by Saturn is the most frustrating combination at work: full effort pushing against full resistance, so you push harder. During a Mars mahadasha or antardasha, the pace itself can become the problem. Mars needs a physical outlet. If it does not get one, it turns on the body.

What does the 12th house say about rest?

The 12th house is sleep, the bed, retreat, withdrawal, the hospital and the ashram. It is where you go to stop. A 12th that is empty with a weak lord, or crowded with malefics, often describes someone for whom rest does not happen by itself. It has to be scheduled, protected and defended.

When a 12th-lord dasha or a Ketu antardasha runs, the chart is often asking you to withdraw. These periods often bring a loss of interest in the ambition that used to drive you. That is not failure. It is a signal to step back before the body does it for you.

Push through or step back: how do you tell from the dasha?

This is the real question, and it is the one a generic horoscope cannot answer. The same job can be a push-through season in one dasha and a step-back season in the next.

Push through or step back: a push-through period shows a strong 6th, 10th or 11th lord dasha, Saturn in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from the Moon and a bright Moon; a step-back period shows a 12th lord or Ketu antardasha, Saturn over or 8th from the Moon and a weak, pressured Moon

A push-through season is hard but it is going somewhere: you are running the dasha of a well-placed 6th, 10th or 11th lord, Saturn transits the 3rd, 6th or 11th from your Moon (its classic good placements), and your Moon is strong enough to refill. Above all, the pressure has an end date you can name. A step-back season looks different: a 12th lord or Ketu sub-period, Saturn on your Moon or in the 8th from it, a pressured Moon, and the clearest sign of all, rest that no longer works.

You can see your running periods to three levels, with dates, in the free Dasha Timeline, and today's transits against your own chart in Transit to You.

A hypothetical Gemini ascendant chart under load: a debilitated Moon in Scorpio in the 6th, natal Mars in Pisces in the 10th with transit Saturn on it, and an empty 12th house in Taurus
A hypothetical Gemini ascendant chart under load: a debilitated Moon in Scorpio in the 6th, natal Mars in Pisces in the 10th with transit Saturn on it, and an empty 12th house in Taurus

Take that example chart. Gemini ascendant, a debilitated Moon in Scorpio in the 6th, and natal Mars in Pisces in the 10th with transit Saturn now sitting on it. Daily work is felt in the body. Work itself is all pressure and friction. The 12th is empty, so rest will not arrive on its own. This is not a weak chart. It is a loaded season. My advice for a chart like this: cut hours before you cut ambition.

What rhythms actually help, planet by planet?

Supastro's remedies are simple and free: mantras and home rituals, nothing to buy. For burnout, the remedy is mostly rhythm.

Under loadHow it shows at workA rhythm that helps
SaturnHeavy, slow, never finishedA fixed end time; one slow Saturday; Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah, 19 times
MoonMood swings, poor sleep, no reserveThe same bedtime; water before screens; Om Som Somaya Namah on Mondays
MarsOverdrive, irritability, conflictHard exercise in the morning, not at night; Om Angarakaya Namah on Tuesdays
6th houseTaking every extra taskOne task you say no to each week
12th houseRest that never happensOne evening a week with no screens and no plans

Frequently asked questions

Can astrology predict burnout?

It can show periods of heavy load and low reserve: Saturn on the Moon, a busy 6th or 10th by dasha, a pressured Moon. It cannot diagnose anything. Use it to plan your pace, and see a doctor for symptoms.

Which house in Vedic astrology shows work stress?

The 6th house shows daily work, service and stress. The 10th shows career pressure and responsibility. The 12th shows rest and whether you can recover.

Does Sade Sati cause burnout?

Not by itself. Sade Sati brings responsibility and slower results. With a strong Moon and good structure it builds you; with a weak Moon and no rest it can wear you down.

How do I know if I should quit or push through?

Look at the running dasha and Saturn's position from your Moon. A strong 6th, 10th or 11th lord period with an end date in sight says push through; a 12th lord or Ketu period with Saturn on the Moon says step back and reduce load.

What mantra helps with work stress?

For Saturn load, Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah. For a tired mind, the Chandra mantra Om Som Somaya Namah. Chant slowly, at the same time each day; it supports you, it does not replace care.
