**It is 1:47 am and you have refreshed your inbox eleven times.** The interview went well. Probably. Your best friend says relax, your mother says pray, and your brain has drafted three worst-case endings. You do not need a personality profile right now. You need one answer: will I get this job?

I know that feeling. What still gives me goosebumps: Vedic astrologers have read that exact moment, when a worry becomes a question, for around fifteen centuries. It is called Prashna, and it may be Jyotisha's most underrated tool.

> **The quick answer**
>
> Prashna (Sanskrit for question) is the horary branch of Vedic astrology. It casts a Prashna kundli for the moment and place a sincere question is asked, then reads that sky for a direct answer: yes, no, or yes with delay, plus what blocks it and when things move. No birth time needed.

## What is Prashna astrology?

Jyotisha has six classical branches: ganita (maths), gola (astronomy), jataka (the [birth chart](https://supastro.com/kundli)), prashna (questions), muhurta (timing) and nimitta (omens). Prashna is one of the six pillars, with a long paper trail:

- _Shatpanchashika_: 56 verses by Prithuyashas, son of Varahamihira (6th century).
- _Prashna Jnana_ by Bhattotpala (10th century), and _Krishneeyam_, a Kerala classic already quoted in the 1200s.
- _Prashna Tantra_: Neelakantha (16th century), who brought precise degree aspects into Vedic horary.
- _Prashna Marga_: 32 chapters written in 1649 CE at Edakkad, on the [Kerala coast where mathematicians chased infinity before Newton](https://supastro.com/blog/before-newton-kerala-was-already-taking-mathematics-toward-infinity).

A fun receipt: in 1647, [William Lilly](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Lilly) published Christian Astrology, the reference book of Western horary, in London. Two cultures, no shared syllabus, one instinct: the moment a question is asked carries information.

Kerala's great temples still hold a formal Deva Prashna for temple matters: The Hindu reported Guruvayur's in 2007, The New Indian Express Sabarimala's in 2014. When a temple visited by millions needs direction, it asks a question.

## How does Prashna astrology work?

The logic that won over the skeptic in me: a question is an event, every event has a time and a place, so a question has a chart of its own. [Carl Jung](https://supastro.com/blog/carl-jung-cast-horoscopes-for-his-patients-why-won-t-today-s-psychologists) said nearly the same in 1930: whatever is born or done at a particular moment has the qualities of that moment.

That sky never repeats. On average the rising sign changes every two hours, the rising degree moves a degree every four minutes, and the Moon enters a new [nakshatra](https://supastro.com/nakshatras) about once a day. Ask ten minutes later, get a different chart. The reading follows a chain:

1. **You are the Lagna.** The rising sign and its lord stand for you.
2. **The matter has a house.** Career is the 10th, marriage the 7th ([the 12 houses](https://supastro.com/blog/12-houses-of-vedic-astrology)). Its lord, the Karyesha, is the thing you want.
3. **The Moon is your mind,** carrying the story between the two.
4. **Do they meet?** Lords applying to an exact aspect (Ithasala) bring the matter together. Separating lords (Easarapha) mean the moment has passed.
5. **What blocks it?** The Badhaka house, Mandi, combustion and retrogression show resistance and delay.
6. **When?** The degrees left before the aspect is exact convert to time, faster in movable signs.

> **Example: the job question**
>
> At the second you ask, the 10th lord is applying to a trine with your Lagna lord and the Moon is heading the same way: yes. If Saturn also presses on the 10th, the yes comes later than you would like. An hour later the sky has moved, so ask once, sincerely.

## Prashna vs natal astrology: what is the difference?

Small correction: Prashna is Vedic astrology. The real contrast is with jataka, your natal chart.

| | Natal chart (Jataka) | Prashna (Horary) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cast for | Your birth moment and place | The moment and place you ask |
| Birth time | Needed, ideally to the minute | Not needed |
| Answers | Who you are, life's big themes | One specific question |
| Horizon | A lifetime, timed by dashas | Days to months |
| Think of it as | Strategy | A decision |

## Vedic Prashna vs KP Prashna: what is the difference?

KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) was built by K.S. Krishnamurti (1908 to 1972). It splits each nakshatra into nine unequal subs, 249 slices of the zodiac, and judges by the sub lord of a house cusp. Many KP astrologers have you pick a number from 1 to 249 instead of using the clock.

| | Classical Vedic Prashna | KP Prashna |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Roots | 6th to 17th century texts | 20th century |
| Chart | The moment you ask | Often a number, 1 to 249 |
| Houses | Whole signs | Placidus cusps |
| Main judge | Lords, Moon, aspects, Badhaka | Cuspal sub lord |
| Sensitivity | Forgiving of small time errors | Minutes can flip the sub lord |

Supastro follows the classical line: whole signs and planets hold steady when the clock is slightly off.

## Why do people use Prashna?

- **No birth time.** Plenty of birth times are guesses. [Prashna does not need one](https://supastro.com/blog/birth-time-accuracy-vedic-astrology).
- **A decision with a deadline.** The offer letter, the visa, the flat you must book by Friday.
- **Someone else's matter.** Houses count from their house (Bhavat Bhavam), so your sister's wedding talks can be read without her chart.
- **Precision inside a period.** Your dasha says career is favoured. Prashna says whether this offer is the one.

## Why do we need deep natal charts if Prashna exists?

My favourite way to explain it: your natal chart is your medical history, genetic map and lifelong wellness plan. Prashna is the emergency room X-ray you get because you twisted your ankle today.

The X-ray says whether the ankle is broken and how long healing takes. It cannot say why you keep twisting it, or what the next ten years hold. That lives in your history. You need both.

In chart terms, Prashna tells you whether this door opens. Your natal chart tells you which hallway you are in: your [Vimshottari dasha](https://supastro.com/guides/vimshottari-dasha-complete-guide), your [D9 Navamsa](https://supastro.com/divisional-charts/d9-navamsa), the yogas that decide how wide any door can open. ## How Supastro reads a Prashna

This is where AI-native matters. Our [free Prashna tool](https://supastro.com/tools/prasna) casts the chart for the second your question reaches us, sidereal (Lahiri) with whole-sign houses, and applies a published catalog of 53 rules built on Prashna Marga, Shatpanchashika, Prashna Tantra and Parashara. The verdict is computed before any AI writes a word. AI only explains it, and code checks the draft. [Math decides, AI explains](https://supastro.com/founder-notes/math-decides-ai-explains-inside-supastro).

It is not a yes machine: across 1,800 random moments, about half of the will-it-happen questions came back no. Every reading shows its working: significators, blocker and, where the chart allows, timing and one specific remedy.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need my birth time for Prashna astrology?

No. Prashna uses the moment and place you ask, so an unknown birth time is no problem.

### Can I ask the same question twice?

Classically, ask once, sincerely. Re-asking until you like the answer turns a reading into a slot machine. Supastro returns the same chart for a repeat within 24 hours.

### Is Prashna the same as Western horary astrology?

Cousins. Both cast a chart for the question, but Vedic Prashna is sidereal, reads nakshatras, and adds Badhaka and Mandi.

## Ask well, then live boldly

Every question you carry has a sky attached. The sages never asked you to wait on the planets. They asked you to ask well, listen closely and act with open eyes. Prashna does not take the decision from you. It lets you walk in informed.

So bring the question sitting on your chest. Ask it once. Let this exact second answer.

> **Read this in context**
>
> No single house, sign, planet, nakshatra, or placement should ever be read in isolation. Authentic Vedic astrology (Jyotisha) is a deep, multi-layered system that weighs hundreds of interacting data points for real accuracy: the Lagna and its lord, the Moon and its nakshatra, the natural and Jaimini Chara karakas, the Arudha padas, planetary strength (Shadbala and Dig Bala), dignity, house ownership, conjunctions and aspects, combustion and retrogression, the avasthas, and Ashtakavarga, all cross-checked across the sixteen divisional charts (Shodasavarga) and timed with the Vimshottari dasha and the current transits. Any one factor only hints at a tendency; the real verdict emerges from how every layer agrees or disagrees with the others. Treat this guide as education, not a personal prediction.
