Same Parents, Opposite Lives: Why Siblings Have Such Different Birth Charts

Same kitchen. Same parents arguing about the same electricity bill. Same school uniform, handed down. And yet one of you left at nineteen and never really came back, and the other one still lives ten minutes from home and knows what everyone's blood pressure is.

Families love to explain this with "she was always like that". Jyotish has a more precise answer, and it starts with the clock.

How can children of the same parents have such different charts?

Because the sky does not wait. Your ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon, and it moves fast. Your Moon is the fastest planet of all, and its nakshatra decides which planet opens your dasha sequence. Slow planets like Saturn and Jupiter barely care about a few hours, but they care a lot about a few years.

Gap between birthsWhat can change
About 2 minutesThe D60 ascendant can change (on average)
4 minutesThe ascendant moves about one degree
About 13 minutesThe D9 Navamsa ascendant can change (on average)
About 2 hoursThe ascendant sign changes, so every house moves (varies by sign and latitude)
About a dayThe Moon's nakshatra changes, so the dasha sequence starts with a different planet
About 2¼ daysThe Moon's sign changes
About a yearJupiter changes sign
About 18 monthsRahu and Ketu change sign
About 2½ yearsSaturn changes sign

Siblings are usually born years apart. By then, almost everything except the outer frame of the family has moved.

A worked comparison: two example siblings

These two are invented for this post, not real people. Call them A and B.

  • A, the elder, born in 1996. Leo ascendant. Moon at 16°40′ Taurus, halfway through Rohini, so A is born with 5 years of Moon dasha left.
  • B, the younger, born in 1999. Libra ascendant. Moon at about 3°49′ Sagittarius, early in Mula, so B is born with 5 years of Ketu dasha left.

Lay the Vimshottari sequences side by side and the "she was always like that" story gets a lot more interesting.

25 to 31Rahu (until 30), then JupiterSun

A spends ages 12 to 30 inside a Rahu mahadasha: eighteen years of appetite, restlessness and wanting out. B spends ages 5 to 25 inside a Venus mahadasha: twenty years of friends, comfort, art and relationships. Same parents. Same house. One teenager is quietly planning an escape route while the other is the one everybody's friends love.

Neither is the "good child". They were simply living different chapters of their own books in the same room.

How does the same family event land in different houses?

Now take one year, 2027, and imagine something big happens to the family: their father retires, and the house they grew up in is sold. Here is what the sky is doing that year, read for each sibling.

  • Saturn enters Aries on 3 June 2027. For A (Leo rising) that is the 9th house, the house of the father. For B (Libra rising) it is the 7th, the house of the partner. A feels the retirement as a weight to carry. B feels it through a relationship question.
  • Sade Sati. Aries is the 12th from A's Taurus Moon, so A's Sade Sati begins. For B's Sagittarius Moon, Aries is the 5th, so no Sade Sati. B, meanwhile, has been living with Saturn in the 4th from the Moon (Kantaka Shani) since Saturn entered Pisces, and that pressure lifts.
  • Rahu enters Capricorn on 5 December 2026. For A that is the 6th house of work and rivals. For B it is the 4th, the house of home and mother. Guess who takes the house sale personally.
  • Jupiter enters Leo on 31 October 2026. A's own ascendant: confidence and visibility. B's 11th: the house of the elder sibling. B may find A suddenly more present, more generous, or more in charge. (Jupiter steps back into Cancer from 25 January to 26 June 2027, so this comes in two waves.)

One retirement. One sold house. Two completely different years. (Saturn also slips back into Pisces from 20 October 2027 to 23 February 2028, so both stories pause for a few months.) The chart does not say which sibling cries at the sale. It says where in each life the event lands.

Where do siblings appear in each other's charts?

The 3rd house shows younger siblings, along with courage and effort. The 11th house shows elder siblings, along with gains and networks. Mars is the natural significator of siblings, and in the Jaimini system the planet with the third-highest degree, the Bhratrikaraka, carries them too. The D3 Drekkana is the divisional chart for siblings, and it often explains why a 3rd house that looks fine in the D1 still produced a difficult brother.

In our example, something neat happens. A's 3rd house is Libra, which is B's ascendant. B's 11th house is Leo, which is A's ascendant. They are literally sitting in each other's sibling houses. That will not happen in every family. When it does, I read it as two people who see each other very clearly, for better and for worse.

Why do siblings describe their parents so differently?

Because each child gets a different father and mother in the chart. The father is read from the 9th house and the Sun (some traditions also use the 10th). The mother is read from the 4th house and the Moon. For A, the 9th is Aries. For B, it is Gemini. Same man. One child experiences him as a fierce, Mars-ruled force; the other as a talker, a Mercury-ruled mind.

The D12 Dwadasamsa is the divisional chart for parents and lineage, and it sharpens this further. When siblings argue about what their childhood was "really" like, they are often both telling the truth about their own D12.

What about twins born minutes apart?

Twins share almost everything in the D1. The difference lives in the fine charts. The D9 ascendant changes on average every 13 minutes and the D60 roughly every 2. The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so ten minutes shifts the dasha balance by anywhere from a couple of weeks to about two months, depending on the planet. That is enough for one twin to hit a turning point weeks before the other.

This is also why an exact birth time matters so much. If yours was rounded to "around 6 in the morning", birth time rectification can narrow it down from events in your life.

What can I do with this?

Pull up your dasha timeline and your sibling's, and line them up by age. Find the years when one of you was in a Rahu or Saturn period and the other in Venus or Jupiter. Those are usually the years you stopped understanding each other. It is not a reason to forgive everything. It is a reason to stop assuming the other person had the same weather you did.

Frequently asked questions

Why do siblings have different lives if they have the same parents?

Because they are born at different times. The ascendant, the Moon's nakshatra and the dasha sequence all differ, so siblings live through different planetary periods at the same age and experience the same family events in different houses.

Which house shows siblings in Vedic astrology?

The 3rd house shows younger siblings and the 11th house shows elder siblings. Mars is the natural significator of siblings, and the D3 Drekkana is the divisional chart used to study them.

Which divisional chart shows parents?

The D12 Dwadasamsa shows parents and lineage. In the birth chart, the 9th house and the Sun describe the father, and the 4th house and the Moon describe the mother.

Do twins have the same birth chart?

Their D1 charts are usually almost identical, but finer divisional charts such as the D9 and D60 can differ within minutes, and the dasha balance shifts slightly. That is often enough to separate their lives.

Can a family event affect siblings differently?

Yes. A transit falls in a different house for each sibling, and each is running a different dasha, so the same event can mean duty for one and a relationship question for another.
