> **The method in one paragraph**
>
> **Jaimini Chara Dasha** is a timing system in which each period is ruled by a **sign**, not a planet. In the method taught by K.N. Rao: (1) start from the ascendant sign; (2) run the sequence forward if the 9th house is in a "savya" sign (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius) and backward if it is in an "apasavya" sign; (3) for each sign, count from the sign to its lord (forward for savya signs, backward for apasavya signs), then subtract one; (4) a lord in its own sign gives 12 years; (5) Scorpio and Aquarius have two lords, with special rules. Each period lasts 1 to 12 years.

## What is Jaimini Chara Dasha?

Most dashas, such as Vimshottari and Yogini, give each period to a planet. **Chara Dasha** gives each period to one of the twelve **signs**, starting from your ascendant. While a sign's period runs, the life areas counted from that sign, the planets in and aspecting it, and the karakas connected to it come forward.

It appears in the Jaimini Upadesa Sutras and in the dasha chapter of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (chapter 46), which defines the period of each sign as the count from the sign to its lord. It is closely tied to the rest of the Jaimini system, especially the [Chara Karakas](https://supastro.com/guides/chara-karakas-the-complete-guide-to-the-jaimini-system-part-1) and the arudha padas.

> **Before you start**
>
> Several methods of Chara Dasha are in use, and they give different results for the same chart. This guide teaches the method associated with K.N. Rao and his students at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which is the most widely taught in India, and notes where other schools differ.

## Step 1: Sort the signs into savya and apasavya

The signs are grouped in threes from Aries, and the groups alternate. Signs in the "savya" (odd-footed) groups count **forward**; signs in the "apasavya" (even-footed) groups count **backward**.

| Group | Signs | Counting direction |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Savya (odd-footed) | Aries, Taurus, Gemini · Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius | Forward (zodiacal) |
| Apasavya (even-footed) | Cancer, Leo, Virgo · Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces | Backward |

## Step 2: Find the direction of the dasha sequence

Look at the sign on your **9th house**. If it is savya, the dashas run forward from the ascendant (Aries, then Taurus, then Gemini…). If it is apasavya, they run backward (Aries, then Pisces, then Aquarius…).

| Ascendant | 9th house | Sequence runs |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Aries, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius, Pisces | Savya sign | Forward |
| Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn | Apasavya sign | Backward |

## Step 3: Calculate the length of each sign's period

For each sign, find where its lord sits. Count from the sign to the lord's sign, **including both**: forward if the dasha sign is savya, backward if it is apasavya. Then **subtract one**. The answer is the period in years.

- **Lord in its own sign:** the period is **12 years**.
- **Range:** every period is between 1 and 12 years, so one full cycle of 12 signs lasts at most 144 years.
- **Exaltation and debilitation:** K.N. Rao's method makes no adjustment. Other schools add a year if the lord is exalted and subtract one if it is debilitated (see "Where the schools disagree" below).

## Step 4: Apply the Scorpio and Aquarius rules

Scorpio has two lords, Mars and Ketu. Aquarius has two, Saturn and Rahu. For these signs:

1. **If one lord sits in the sign itself,** use the _other_ lord for the count.
2. **If both lords sit in the sign,** the period is 12 years.
3. **If neither is in the sign,** use the stronger lord: first the one joined by more planets; if that is tied, the one at the higher degree.

## Step 5: Divide each period into sub-periods

In K.N. Rao's method, each main period divides into **12 equal sub-periods**, each one-twelfth of the main period. A 3-year period gives twelve 3-month sub-periods. The sub-periods run in the same direction as the main sequence, starting from the sign after the dasha sign, and the dasha sign's own sub-period comes **last**.

## A full worked example

Take a hypothetical chart with an **Aries ascendant** and these placements: Sun in Leo, Moon and Rahu in Taurus, Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Aquarius, Jupiter in Gemini, Venus in Pisces, Saturn in Libra, Ketu in Scorpio.

_Figure: Example chart for Chara Dasha: Aries ascendant, Sun in Leo, Moon and Rahu in Taurus, Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Aquarius, Jupiter in Gemini, Venus in Pisces, Saturn in Libra, Ketu in Scorpio_

**Direction.** The 9th house from Aries is Sagittarius, a savya sign, so the dashas run **forward**: Aries, Taurus, Gemini and so on to Pisces.

| Dasha sign | Type | Lord used | Count | Years |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Aries | Savya, forward | Mars in Cancer | Aries → Cancer = 4 | 3 |
| Taurus | Savya, forward | Venus in Pisces | Taurus → Pisces = 11 | 10 |
| Gemini | Savya, forward | Mercury in Aquarius | Gemini → Aquarius = 9 | 8 |
| Cancer | Apasavya, backward | Moon in Taurus | Cancer → Taurus = 3 | 2 |
| Leo | Apasavya, backward | Sun in Leo (own sign) | Lord in own sign | 12 |
| Virgo | Apasavya, backward | Mercury in Aquarius | Virgo → Aquarius = 8 | 7 |
| Libra | Savya, forward | Venus in Pisces | Libra → Pisces = 6 | 5 |
| Scorpio | Savya, forward | Mars in Cancer (Ketu sits in Scorpio) | Scorpio → Cancer = 9 | 8 |
| Sagittarius | Savya, forward | Jupiter in Gemini | Sagittarius → Gemini = 7 | 6 |
| Capricorn | Apasavya, backward | Saturn in Libra | Capricorn → Libra = 4 | 3 |
| Aquarius | Apasavya, backward | Rahu in Taurus (stronger co-lord) | Aquarius → Taurus = 10 | 9 |
| Pisces | Apasavya, backward | Jupiter in Gemini | Pisces → Gemini = 10 | 9 |

Two of these need a closer look:

- **Scorpio:** Ketu, one of its lords, sits in Scorpio, so the rule says to use the other lord, Mars. Scorpio is savya, so count forward from Scorpio to Cancer: 9, minus 1 = **8 years**.
- **Aquarius:** neither Saturn (Libra) nor Rahu (Taurus) is in Aquarius. Rahu shares Taurus with the Moon, while Saturn is alone in Libra, so Rahu is stronger. Aquarius is apasavya, so count backward from Aquarius to Taurus: 10, minus 1 = **9 years**.

The twelve periods add up to **82 years**. The first, Aries, lasts 3 years and divides into twelve 3-month sub-periods: Taurus, Gemini, Cancer and so on, with Aries last.

## Where do the schools disagree?

| Point | K.N. Rao method (this guide) | Other approaches |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Exalted or debilitated lord | No adjustment | BPHS, and the school of Sanjay Rath and P.V.R. Narasimha Rao: add 1 year if exalted, subtract 1 if debilitated |
| Direction of sequence | Set by the 9th house sign | Some commentators use whether the ascendant itself is odd or even |
| "Minus one" | Always subtract one | A practitioners' convention; the BPHS verse does not state it explicitly |
| Second cycle | Not covered here | Some schools use 12 minus the first-cycle length |
| Sub-period order | Dasha sign's own sub-period last | BPHS (ch. 51) starts from the dasha sign or its 7th, whichever is stronger |

In the example, the ±1 rule would change four periods: Mars is debilitated in Cancer (Aries becomes 2 years, Scorpio 7) and Venus is exalted in Pisces (Taurus becomes 11, Libra 6). Pick one method, and use it consistently.

## How do you read a Chara Dasha period?

A practical approach used by many Jaimini astrologers:

1. **Treat the dasha sign as a temporary ascendant.** Count houses from it to see which areas of life the period activates.
2. **Look at the planets in the sign and aspecting it** by Jaimini sign aspect (rashi drishti).
3. **Check the Chara Karakas.** A period of a sign holding or aspected by the Atmakaraka, Amatyakaraka or Darakaraka highlights self, career or partnership.
4. **Use the arudhas.** The Arudha Lagna (AL) shows how the period appears to the world; the Upapada (UL) matters for marriage.
5. **Confirm with a planetary dasha and transits.** Strong predictions agree across systems.

P.V.R. Narasimha Rao's free textbook _Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach_ gives exercises of this kind, for example testing whether a sibling is born in the dasha of a sign linked to the 3rd house, its lord or the Bhratri Karaka.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between Chara Dasha and Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari is a planetary dasha on a fixed 120-year cycle, starting from the Moon's nakshatra. Chara Dasha is a sign dasha whose period lengths depend on where each sign's lord sits in your chart, so two people with the same Moon can have very different Chara periods.

### How long is each Chara Dasha period?

Between 1 and 12 years. A sign whose lord sits in the sign itself gets the full 12 years.

### Which Chara Dasha method is correct?

There is no consensus. K.N. Rao's method is the most widely taught in India; the Rath and P.V.R. Narasimha Rao school applies an exaltation and debilitation adjustment. Test a method against known events in your own life before relying on it.

### Does Chara Dasha need an accurate birth time?

Yes. It starts from the ascendant sign, and the ascendant changes about every two hours, so an error near a sign boundary changes the entire sequence. See [birth time rectification](https://supastro.com/birth-time-rectification).

### Where can I calculate my Chara Dasha?

Jagannatha Hora and AstroSage Kundli calculate it in full, with options for different methods. Vedic Rishi's free web kundli shows it too. Supastro currently calculates a simplified version of Chara Dasha for some features, but its chat answers rely on Vimshottari and Yogini dasha.
