Marriage in Ketu Mahadasha: Parashara's Exact Yes, No and When
Ketu Mahadasha does not cancel marriage. Parashara gives a well-placed Ketu happiness from the spouse and names marriage outright in one sub-period. Where Ketu must sit, which sub-period to marry in, how male and female charts differ, and what Sade Sati adds.

Ketu Mahadasha does not cancel marriage. That is the first myth I want dead. Parashara wrote the opposite: a well-placed Ketu brings happiness from the spouse during its own period (BPHS 47.72–77). What Ketu does is refuse to fake it. If your chart cannot hold a marriage, Ketu exposes it faster than any other dasha.
What does getting married in Ketu Mahadasha mean?
It means your wedding and the first years of the marriage run under Ketu's seven-year Vimshottari period, ruled by the karaka of detachment and separation. Ketu has no body, so it borrows: it gives mainly the results of the house it occupies and the lord it joins (BPHS 34.16). Your Ketu is not my Ketu.
Most people never face this question. Your birth nakshatra fixes when Ketu Mahadasha arrives.

| Moon's birth nakshatra | Ketu Mahadasha starts at age | Marriage-age exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada | 17 to 36 | The core group |
| Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati | 0 to 17 (ends by 24) | Early marriages only |
| Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada | 36 to 52 | Late or second marriages |
| All other nakshatras | At birth, or after 52 | None |

What does Parashara say about marriage in Ketu Mahadasha, and why?
Parashara makes every result conditional on placement. Phaladeepika gives the default for an unsupported Ketu: sorrow and confusion through women, loss of wealth, time away from home (19.25).

| Where Ketu sits | What the text says | My verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th; benefic, own or exaltation sign | Happiness from spouse and children (BPHS 47.72–77) | Yes |
| 3rd, 6th or 11th | Gains, good relations with friends (BPHS 47.72–77) | Yes, if the 7th lord holds |
| 2nd or 7th, or tied to their lords | Great distress, separation from family (BPHS 59.5–6) | No, unless the D9 rescues it |
| 8th or 12th, or malefic aspect | Loss of kin and home, anxiety (BPHS 47.77) | No |
| Debilitated, or 8th/12th with a combust planet | Distress to spouse and children (BPHS 59.3–4) | No |
The 7th is a kendra, but chapter 59 singles it out by name. When a general verse and a specific one collide, I follow the specific one.
Why: Ketu signifies separation and moksha. On the marriage axis or in a dusthana it does exactly that to the spouse and family. In a kendra or trikona the same detachment serves dharma: fewer illusions, a marriage built on duty rather than display.
Which sub-period of Ketu Mahadasha gives marriage?

Ketu–Mercury. With Mercury in a kendra, trikona, own sign or exaltation, Parashara lists "functions, like marriage suddenly" (BPHS 59.69–71). It is the only sub-period in his Ketu chapter that names marriage.
- Ketu–Venus (14 months): fortune if Venus is strong; pointless quarrels if Venus is 6th, 8th or 12th from Ketu (59.7–14).
- Ketu–Moon (7 months): happiness to spouse and children if the Moon is strong and waxing (59.25–28).
- Ketu–Mars: distress to the spouse if Mars rules your 2nd or 7th (59.43–44).
- Ketu–Jupiter: separation from spouse and children if Jupiter is debilitated or in a dusthana (59.55–56).
Ketu–Ketu repeats the Mahadasha rule (59.1–2). Sun, Rahu and Saturn sub-periods carry no marriage promise. Your exact dates: Dasha Calculator.
Are the effects the same for male and female charts?
Same rules, different weights. Parashara says every effect given for men applies to women; the 7th shows the husband's fortune, the 8th his longevity (BPHS 80.2).
| Factor | Male chart | Female chart |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse significator | Venus | Jupiter |
| Sharpest sub-period | Ketu–Venus | Ketu–Jupiter |
| Houses judged | 7th | 7th and 8th |
| Ketu in the 8th | Damage to family and home | The same, in the house of the marital bond |
A woman with Ketu in the 8th and a debilitated Jupiter should not fix her wedding inside Ketu–Jupiter. Both texts point the same way.
Is it recommended to get married during Ketu Mahadasha?
- Ketu is in a supporting house in both D1 and D9
- Ketu's sign lord is strong and not combust
- The wedding falls in Ketu–Mercury or Ketu–Venus with that planet strong
- Jupiter and Saturn both touch your 7th house or its lord
- Ketu is in the 2nd, 7th, 8th or 12th, or with their lords, in D1 and D9
- Ketu is debilitated, or sits in a dusthana with a combust planet
- The sub-period lord is 6th, 8th or 12th from Ketu
- Sade Sati runs through Ketu–Saturn with a weak natal Saturn
In the right-hand column? My answer is no. Wait for a sub-period that passes the left column, or for Venus Mahadasha if your Venus is strong. A wedding fixed against your chart costs more than a year's wait.
What changes when Sade Sati runs alongside Ketu Mahadasha?
Sade Sati is Saturn's transit through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon. Phaladeepika gives it sickness to spouse and children, disease, then strain on money (26.22–23). Add Ketu, which already loosens the Moon's attachments, and the mind goes cold on the exact decision you are trying to make.
The overlap running right now: Uttara Bhadrapada is a Saturn nakshatra in Pisces, and Saturn has sat in Pisces since 29 March 2025. Its natives in their twenties and thirties are the group most likely to carry Ketu Mahadasha and Sade Sati together.
| Moon nakshatra | Saturn in Pisces (to 3 June 2027) | Saturn in Aries (from 3 June 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| Uttara Bhadrapada | Sade Sati peak | Setting phase, peak again 20 Oct 2027 to 23 Feb 2028 |
| Anuradha | 5th from Moon: money and clarity decline | 6th from Moon: one of Saturn's best transits |
| Pushya | 9th from Moon; Ketu crosses your Moon sign from 5 Dec 2026 | 10th from Moon |
What almost everyone gets wrong: the peak is not a veto. Saturn on your Moon sign casts its 7th aspect on the 7th from your Moon, the Saturn half of the double transit. What it punishes is a weak natal Saturn or Moon.
Where I say no outright: Ketu–Saturn during Sade Sati with a weak natal Saturn. Parashara gives that sub-period distress, loss of position and travel abroad (59.61–62). Three Saturn–Ketu pressures on one wedding.
What do most astrologers miss about marriage in Ketu Mahadasha?
- It is a nakshatra question first. Skip the birth star and you are guessing.
- Ketu can never be your Darakaraka. The chara karakas use seven planets; the eight-karaka scheme adds Rahu, never Ketu.
- The marriage sub-period comes last. A Ketu–Mercury wedding walks straight into a 20-year Venus Mahadasha. Read Venus before you book the hall.
- Ketu copies its dispositor. Ketu in Libra with a strong Venus and with a combust Venus are two different dashas.
- Parashara's remedy is mantra, not stone: Durga Saptashati and Mrityunjaya japa (59.5–6). No cat's-eye appears in the chapter.
What else has to be computed before this becomes a prediction?
| Layer | What I compute | How it can change the answer |
|---|---|---|
| D1 and D9 | Ketu's house in both; D9 7th lord | Strong D9 softens a D1 no; bad in both makes it final |
| Ketu's dispositor | Dignity, Shadbala, avastha, combustion | Carries Ketu, or sinks it |
| Darakaraka, Upapada, A7 | DK in D9; 2nd from the UL; A7 to AL | Whether the marriage continues once it starts |
| Exact degrees | Gandanta, vargottama | Overturns a sign-level reading |
| Ashtakavarga | SAV of the 7th; Jupiter and Saturn BAV, kakshya | Low bindus weaken a perfect double transit |
| Bhava Chalit | Ketu across the 6th–7th or 7th–8th cusp | Moves Ketu from yes to no |
| Yogini and transits | Window cross-check; double transit on the 7th | The event fires only when both agree |
Frequently asked questions
Can you get married in Ketu Mahadasha?
Yes, if Ketu is in a kendra, trikona, or the 3rd, 6th or 11th house with a strong sign lord. If it is in the 2nd, 7th, 8th or 12th and the Navamsa repeats it, no.
Which antardasha of Ketu Mahadasha is best for marriage?
Ketu–Mercury with a strong Mercury, the only sub-period where Parashara names marriage (BPHS 59.69–71). Ketu–Venus with a strong Venus is second.
Is Ketu Mahadasha bad for marriage in a female chart?
Same rules, but judged through Jupiter and the 8th house as well as the 7th. Ketu in the 8th or a weak Jupiter in Ketu–Jupiter makes it a no.
Does Ketu in the 7th house deny marriage?
It does not stop the wedding; it damages what follows. BPHS gives it distress and separation from family unless the D9 is strong.
Should I marry during Sade Sati and Ketu Mahadasha together?
Only if natal Saturn and the Moon are strong and the wedding avoids Ketu–Saturn. The Sade Sati peak can even support commitment.
How long are the sub-periods of Ketu Mahadasha?
Ketu 4 months 27 days, Venus 14 months, Sun 4 months 6 days, Moon 7 months, Mars 4 months 27 days, Rahu 12 months 18 days, Jupiter 11 months 6 days, Saturn 13 months 9 days, Mercury 11 months 27 days: seven years.
What is the remedy for marriage problems in Ketu Mahadasha?
Parashara prescribes Durga Saptashati and Mrityunjaya japa. Supastro builds DIY mantras and home rituals for your chart. Never gemstones.
Verse numbers follow the BPHS and Phaladeepika English editions in our library; other editions number chapters differently. Transit dates from Supastro's engine (Lahiri ayanamsa, mean node).
