Best Astrology Apps for Beginners (2026): 8 Vedic Apps That Explain Your Chart Without the Jargon
Supastro, AskSoma, Om.AI, Cosmitra, Melooha, Drik Panchang, AstroSage and Nummi, judged the way a beginner should judge them, with a ten-term glossary to read any Vedic chart.

Disclosure: Supastro publishes this list and makes one of the apps on it. Every competitor fact comes from the company's own pages or store listings, figures last checked on 25 October 2026. Nobody paid to be included, and nobody gets a star rating from us.
What should a beginner look for in an astrology app?
Five tests. An app that fails the first two is not doing Vedic astrology.
- It asks for your birth time and place. Your Lagna, the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born, changes about every two hours. Without it there are no houses.
- It tells you your Moon sign and nakshatra. Vedic astrology reads you from the Moon, not from your birthday.
- It lets you start free, without a meter. You will have a dozen basic questions. They should not cost ₹30 a minute.
- It explains its words. A good app defines dasha the first time it uses it.
- It does not sell you fear. If the first reading ends at a gemstone shop, leave.
Keep this glossary open. Every Vedic app uses these words.
| Word | What it means | Why it matters to you |
|---|---|---|
| Kundli | Your birth chart: where each planet stood at your exact birth minute and place | Everything else is read from it |
| Lagna (ascendant) | The sign rising in the east at your birth | Sets all twelve houses; needs your birth time |
| Rashi | Your Moon sign | Your sign in Vedic astrology, used for daily horoscopes |
| Nakshatra | One of 27 star segments; yours is where your Moon sat | Starts your dasha clock |
| Graha | A planet; Vedic astrology counts nine, including Rahu and Ketu | The actors in every reading |
| Bhava | A house: one of twelve areas of life | Tells you where a planet acts |
| Dasha | The planetary period your life is running | Tells you when |
| Gochar | Transits: where the planets are moving now | The trigger on top of the dasha |
| Ayanamsa | The correction between Western and Vedic zodiacs, about 24 degrees | Why your Vedic sign differs |
| Navamsa (D9) | The ninth-division chart | Read for marriage and inner strength |

1. Supastro: start free, no login, plain English (ours)
Supastro's 39 free tools need no account. Start with the free kundli and the nakshatra finder; Today's Panchang explains each element in plain English. Read Vedic Jyotish for beginners and skeptics, then the ten-step chart-reading series. A free account adds 5 credits, enough for two questions to the AI. Unsure of your birth time? Rectification works it out from events in your life.
2. AskSoma: a short course and a free chat
AskSoma has five "Learn" pages (kundli, houses, planets, dashas, transits) and a page on how Vedic differs from Western. Free users get three questions on day one, then one a day. One trap: its free Sun, Moon and Rising calculators show the Western result first and the Vedic one second.
3. Om.AI: the easiest start in Hindi
Om.AI's first question is free, its menus are in English or Hindi, and its AI answers in the language you type. It explains why Vedic and Western signs differ, and it offers a 24-hour money-back guarantee. Prices appear only inside the app.
4. Cosmitra: the best glossary
Cosmitra publishes plain-language definitions of nakshatras, dashas, yogas, houses and the nine grahas, plus a "Vedic Astrology Basics" guide. It is web-only. Its paid prices load only in a browser, and we could not read them on 25 October.
5. Melooha: for people who do not know their birth time
Melooha lets you tick "I do not know my time of birth" and carry on. Its Astropedia answers general astrology questions free and without limit, in English, Hindi or Hinglish. One beginner trap: its horoscope index pairs each rashi with Western Sun-sign dates.
6. Drik Panchang: free lessons, no hand-holding
Drik Panchang's free tutorials cover the 27 nakshatras, panchang and kundali matching, in English and Hindi. It tells beginners plainly that the Lahiri ayanamsa "can be used without much worrying". Its kundali is free and deep. It explains nothing about your chart in particular.
7. AstroSage: the free course, then the meter
AstroSage's "How to Learn Astrology" course is free in Hindi and English. The app is where beginners get confused: its human-astrologer service is branded "AstroSage AI", its AI astrologers charge by the minute, and its shop sells gemstones. More in Supastro vs AstroSage.
8. Nummi: friendly, but check its Sun
Nummi is a calm AI companion with a beginner's guide on its blog, at $7.99 a month. It calls itself Vedic, yet on 25 October its homepage put the Sun at 2 degrees Scorpio, the Western position; the Vedic Sun was in Libra.
Not on this list: Co-Star and CHANI, which AskSoma ranks second and third for beginners. Neither App Store description mentions Vedic or sidereal astrology, and both are English only. Good apps, wrong first app if you want Jyotish. More in Supastro vs Co-Star and Supastro vs CHANI.
Where does Supastro fall short for beginners?
It is English only. There is no human astrologer to ask a first question out loud. Credits take a minute to understand: a question costs 2, a deep prediction 4. And there is no Play Store or App Store app; you add it to your phone from the browser.
What else do beginners ask about astrology apps?
What is the best astrology app for a complete beginner?
One that asks for your birth time, shows your Moon sign and nakshatra, and lets you start free. Supastro does that in English with no login; Om.AI does it in Hindi.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For your Lagna and houses, yes. A few minutes can move the Lagna degree and shift dasha dates by weeks. If you do not know it, start with Melooha's unknown-time option or rectify it.
Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?
Western astrology fixes its zodiac to the seasons; Vedic astrology fixes it to the stars. The gap, the ayanamsa, is about 24 degrees today, so many people move back one sign.
Is Co-Star a Vedic astrology app?
Its App Store description does not mention Vedic or sidereal astrology anywhere. If you want Jyotish, start elsewhere.
Which astrology app is free for beginners?
Supastro's 39 tools and Drik Panchang's kundali are free with no question limit. Melooha's general questions are free and unlimited. Om.AI and AskSoma give a few free chart questions.
Should a beginner talk to a live astrologer first?
Not first. Learn your Lagna, Moon sign, nakshatra and current dasha from a free app. Then, if you pay someone by the minute, you are paying for judgement, not for definitions.
