Your Darakaraka Won't Show Your Spouse's Face. Here's What It Shows.
Your Darakaraka, the lowest-degree planet in your chart, does not describe a face. Here is what the classical texts let it show about your future spouse, and what must be read beside it.

No. Your Darakaraka, the planet at the lowest degree in your birth chart, will not show your future spouse's face, height or eye colour, and no verse in the classical library I work from gives it that job. It shows which planet carries your spouse's role, what that planet is made of and, read in the Navamsa, what kind of person fills the role. Less than the looks posts promise; far more useful.
What is a Darakaraka, in plain English?
It is the planet that has travelled the shortest distance through its own sign. Every sign is 30 degrees wide. Note how far each of the seven visible planets, Sun to Saturn, has gone into its sign, and rank them. The highest is your Atmakaraka (the soul planet). The lowest is your Darakaraka (the spouse planet).
The rule is Parashara's, not mine. In his Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS below), he draws the karakas (planets that stand for the people in your life) from the seven planets, Sun to Saturn (BPHS 32.1 to 2), and lists them by falling degree, ending with the Stri Karaka, the significator of the wife (BPHS 32.13 to 17). Supastro reads that planet as the spouse in every chart, a man's or a woman's. The full system is in the complete guide to chara karakas.
Supastro ranks exactly those seven, Rahu and Ketu excluded. The free Soul Planet calculator shows your Darakaraka, its Navamsa sign and a close-call warning when it sits under 1 degree below the next planet, where a few minutes of birth-time error could swap them.
Can your Darakaraka show what your spouse looks like?
No. The looks shortcut goes like this: find the lowest-degree planet, open the chapter where Parashara describes each planet's body, and read it out as your partner. Venus 'has charming eyes' and 'curly hair' (BPHS 3.28). Those lines describe the planet. The karaka chapter only tells you how to rank planets; it never passes a body to anyone.
Parashara does give a few looks words for a spouse. None comes from the Darakaraka:
- Your Karakamsa (the Navamsa sign of your soul planet): the Moon and Jupiter in the 7th sign from it give 'a very beautiful wife' (BPHS 33.47 to 48).
- The 2nd sign from your Upapada Lagna, the marriage point: a benefic (a naturally helpful planet) linked to it makes the spouse 'beautiful, fortunate and virtuous'; Mercury with Rahu there gives 'a stout-bodied wife' (BPHS 30.13 to 22).
- In a woman's chart, a sign of Venus on the 7th house, or on the 7th of the Navamsa, gives a husband who is 'very good-looking' (BPHS 80.22 to 25).
That is the whole vocabulary: beautiful, stout, good-looking. No eye colour, no height, no face. Anyone selling you a face is selling something the source never had.
Why does my app say Rahu is my Darakaraka?
Because it counts eight planets, not seven. Parashara records the dispute himself: some include Rahu, and for Rahu, who moves backwards through the signs, you count 30 minus his degree (BPHS 32.1 to 8). Supastro uses the seven.
Take a hypothetical birth: 6 November 2003, 11:10 a.m., Mumbai. With seven planets, Venus at 10°14' Scorpio (Vrishchika) is the lowest, so Venus is the Darakaraka. Count Rahu, at 26°45' Aries, as 30 minus 26.74, which is 3.26, and Rahu takes the seat. Same sky, same minute. The shortcut gives you 'charming eyes' from Venus in one app and a 'smoky appearance' from Rahu in the other (BPHS 3.28 and 3.30). A method that flips with the counting rule is not reading your spouse.
What does your Darakaraka actually show about your spouse?
Four things. Which planet holds the spouse's seat. That planet's nature, in Parashara's words (BPHS 3.11 to 15). Its sign in the Navamsa chart, the D9 chart that cuts each sign into nine parts, which Parashara uses for the spouse (BPHS 7.1 to 8). And its strength: Supastro's Future Partner reading grades the Darakaraka Strong, Steady or Weak before it writes a line.

In the hypothetical chart, Venus sits in Scorpio in the birth chart and lands in Libra, its own sign, in the Navamsa. Find your planet's row below; the last column is the body text the shortcut lifts, which describes the planet, not your partner.
| Your Darakaraka | Parashara on the planet (BPHS 3.11 to 15) | What it lends to your spouse's role, as I read it | Body text the shortcut copies (BPHS 3.23 to 30) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (Surya) | Soul of all; royal; a natural malefic | Authority, pride and status sit at the centre of the bond | Honey-coloured eyes, square body, little hair |
| Moon (Chandra) | The mind; royal; benefic when waxing, malefic when waning | The bond runs through your moods and your home; the Moon's phase at birth sets its tone | Round body, auspicious looks, sweet speech |
| Mars (Mangal) | Your strength; commander of the army; a natural malefic | Drive, courage and open conflict; this partner pushes | Blood-red eyes, thin waist, thin build |
| Mercury (Budha) | Speech; the heir to the throne; benefic alone, malefic when joined with a malefic | Talk, wit and youth; the company Mercury keeps decides which way it turns | Attractive physique, fond of jokes |
| Jupiter (Guru) | Knowledge and happiness; a minister; benefic | Counsel, learning and good fortune arrive through the partner | Big body, tawny hair and eyes |
| Venus (Shukra) | Potency; a minister; benefic | Desire, pleasure and refinement lead the bond | Charming eyes, splendid physique, curly hair |
| Saturn (Shani) | Grief; a servant; a natural malefic | Duty, weight and slow building; Parashara's own word for Saturn is grief | Long, lean build, big teeth, coarse hair |
| Rahu (only if your app counts eight) | With Ketu, the army of the planets; a natural malefic | Supastro does not give Rahu this seat; ask your app which count it uses | Smoky appearance, a bluish physique |
Does it show your spouse's job, or where you meet?
Not in any verse I can show you. I searched the library, Parashara to Phaladeepika, for a rule that reads the spouse's work or meeting place from the Darakaraka. There is none. The nearest skill clue again belongs to the soul planet: Mercury in the 7th from your Karakamsa gives a spouse 'versed in arts' (BPHS 33.47 to 48).
Where the spouse comes from has its own rule: take the strongest of the planet in your 7th house (marriage), the 7th lord and Venus, and read the direction of the sign it owns (Phaladeepika 10.12). Timing has another: the period of a planet in, aspecting or owning the 7th (Phaladeepika 10.13). Neither uses the Darakaraka.
Supastro's Future Partner reading is a portrait in words, not a photo. It sets the Darakaraka beside the 7th house and its lord, the Navamsa 7th and its lord, Venus for a wife or Jupiter for a husband, and your Upapada Lagna. It also separates the person you end up with from the type you fall for (Venus and Mars). If those keep pulling apart, read why you keep attracting the same partner.

How much weight does the Darakaraka get in a real reading?
Less than the trend gives it. In Supastro's computed marriage verdict, the Darakaraka's condition counts at three quarters of the weight Venus gets for the same condition, and is skipped when the Darakaraka is Venus or the 7th lord, so no planet is counted twice. The 7th house, Venus and the Upapada carry the case; the Darakaraka is one more witness. Two charts together is a separate computation: kundli matching. And like the twin flame label, a face read off one planet sells a certainty the texts never offered.
What else has to be computed before this becomes a prediction?
| Layer | What I compute | How it can change the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Birth time and the degree gap | The gap between your Darakaraka and the next planet up | Under 1 degree, a few minutes of birth time can hand the seat to another planet |
| Counting scheme | Seven planets, Sun to Saturn, never mixed with the eight-planet view | Counting Rahu can move the seat to Rahu, as in the hypothetical chart |
| 7th house and its lord (birth chart) | Occupants, the lord's sign, house, dignity, combustion and company (BPHS 18) | A fallen or combust 7th lord undercuts a strong Darakaraka; an exalted one can carry a weak one |
| Navamsa (D9) | The Darakaraka's Navamsa sign, the Navamsa 7th and its lord (BPHS 7.1 to 8) | The person the birth chart suggests can read very differently once the Navamsa is in |
| Upapada and the 2nd from it | Sign, lord and occupants (BPHS 30) | Shows whether the marriage holds, which the Darakaraka cannot |
| Venus and Jupiter | Venus as the marriage significator for everyone, Jupiter as the husband significator in a woman's chart | They can contradict the Darakaraka's story outright |
| Karakamsa | Planets in the 7th from your soul planet's Navamsa sign (BPHS 33.47 to 48) | The only place Parashara uses 'very beautiful' for a spouse |
| Strength | Shadbala, the six-source planetary strength, for the Darakaraka and the 7th lord | A weak planet delivers late, partly or with damage |
| Dasha and transits | Periods of planets in, aspecting or owning the 7th (Phaladeepika 10.13), then Jupiter and Saturn transits | Timing comes from here, never from the Darakaraka alone |
Frequently asked questions
Is the Darakaraka the same as the 7th house lord?
No. The 7th lord is whichever planet owns the 7th sign from your rising sign. The Darakaraka is chosen by degree and can be any of the seven. When one planet holds both jobs, Supastro's marriage verdict counts it once.
Can the Darakaraka predict my spouse's skin colour?
No. Parashara gives the planets their own colours, the Sun blood-red and Saturn dark among them (BPHS 3.16 to 17). No verse in the library hands a colour to your spouse through the Darakaraka.
Can I predict my future spouse from my date of birth alone?
No. The 7th house depends on your rising sign, which changes roughly every two hours, and the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so even the Darakaraka can change with the hour. A date without a time gives guesses.
What if two planets are almost tied for the lowest degree?
Then your Darakaraka depends on your birth time. Under 1 degree, the Soul Planet calculator flags a close call. Fix the time first.
Does a weak Darakaraka mean I won't marry?
No. One planet never settles that. Whether marriage comes is read from the 7th house and its lord, Venus, the Navamsa and the Upapada together (BPHS 18 and 30). Supastro's Future Partner reading is written never to treat a weak Darakaraka as no partner: it means a later or harder arrival.
