Love Marriage or Arranged? Your Kundli Voted. Will Your Parents?
There is no love marriage yoga in the classical texts. Your kundli votes on three things instead: whether your romance reaches your marriage house, whether that marriage holds, and whether your father's and mother's houses side with you.

Your kundli (your Vedic birth chart) has no box marked love and no box marked arranged. It has something sharper: whether your romance reaches your marriage house, whether that marriage holds, and whether your parents' houses pull with you or against you. Read those three and you will know if you are fighting for the right person or just fighting.
Is there a love marriage yoga in your kundli?
No. I searched the eleven classical texts in our library. The phrase appears once, in one example chart in Bhrigu Nandi Nadi, with no combination given. The rest is habit wearing a verse's clothes.
Parashara gives the 5th lord in the 7th house honour and happiness from children (BPHS 24.55, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra), and the 7th lord in the 5th virtue and wealth (BPHS 24.77). Mantreswara reads the same two placements as loss of the spouse or no son (Phaladeepika 10.2). Opposite verdicts, and neither mentions who chose the partner.
Your 5th house is children, learning and the mind; Uttara Kalamrita adds affairs and friendship (chapter 5). Your 7th house is the spouse (BPHS 11.8). A house's lord is the planet ruling its sign. Modern astrologers read a link between the two lords as romance and marriage being one story: a signal, not a yoga.
How do your 5th and 7th lords link?
Your rising sign gives you both planets. Without an exact birth time you cannot know either one.
| Your rising sign | Your 5th lord (romance) | Your 7th lord (marriage) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries (Mesha) | Sun (Surya), ruling Leo | Venus (Shukra), ruling Libra |
| Taurus (Vrishabha) | Mercury (Budh), ruling Virgo | Mars (Mangal), ruling Scorpio |
| Mithuna (Gemini) | Venus (Shukra), ruling Libra | Jupiter (Guru), ruling Sagittarius |
| Cancer (Karka) | Mars (Mangal), ruling Scorpio | Saturn (Shani), ruling Capricorn |
| Leo (Simha) | Jupiter (Guru), ruling Sagittarius | Saturn (Shani), ruling Aquarius |
| Virgo (Kanya) | Saturn (Shani), ruling Capricorn | Jupiter (Guru), ruling Pisces |
| Libra (Tula) | Saturn (Shani), ruling Aquarius | Mars (Mangal), ruling Aries |
| Scorpio (Vrishchika) | Jupiter (Guru), ruling Pisces | Venus (Shukra), ruling Taurus |
| Sagittarius (Dhanu) | Mars (Mangal), ruling Aries | Mercury (Budh), ruling Gemini |
| Capricorn (Makara) | Venus (Shukra), ruling Taurus | Moon (Chandra), ruling Cancer |
| Aquarius (Kumbha) | Mercury (Budh), ruling Gemini | Sun (Surya), ruling Leo |
| Pisces (Meena) | Moon (Chandra), ruling Cancer | Mercury (Budh), ruling Virgo |
Then find where those two planets sit.

| How your 5th and 7th lords link | What the verse says | My reading (not a verse) |
|---|---|---|
| One planet rules both | Never occurs: no rising sign gives one planet both houses | Skip this row. A report that shows it is wrong |
| 5th lord sits in your 7th house | Parashara: honour, religion, children (BPHS 24.55). Mantreswara: loss of the spouse is certain (Phaladeepika 10.2) | The romance walks into the marriage house. Whether it survives is the Upapada's call |
| 7th lord sits in your 5th house | Parashara: virtue, delight, wealth (BPHS 24.77). Mantreswara: loss of the spouse or no son (Phaladeepika 10.2) | The spouse arrives through the romance side of life. Same warning applies |
| They exchange signs | One of the 28 Maha Yogas: wealth, authority, vehicles, children (Phaladeepika 6.32 to 34) | The tightest link of all. Still silent on who chose whom |
| They sit together in one sign | No verse for this pair. With the 7th sign, its lord and Venus all in even signs, strong 5th and 7th lords clear of the Sun's rays give spouse and children (Phaladeepika 10.9) | A real link. Check that neither lord is too close to the Sun |
| They aspect each other | No verse for this pair | The weakest link. It needs the running period to switch it on |
| No link at all | Both houses still bear fruit if the 9th lord, a benefic or their own lord occupies or aspects them (Phaladeepika 10.1) | Romance and marriage run on separate tracks. Expect the match to arrive through family or an introduction |
Will the romance actually become a marriage?
The Upapada decides, not the 5th. Your Upapada Lagna is the arudha (the image, how a house shows up in the world) of the 12th house: the marriage itself. A benefic (Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon, Mercury) joining or aspecting it gives full happiness from spouse and children; a malefic's sign or a malefic (Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu, Ketu) on it, with no benefic help, and the native goes without a spouse (BPHS 3.11, 30.1 to 6). The 2nd house from it decides whether it lasts: a debilitated or malefic planet there destroys the marriage (BPHS 30.7 to 12), and Saturn with Rahu there loses the spouse through scandal or death (BPHS 30.16).
Then harmony. Your Arudha Lagna (your public image) and Darapada (the arudha of the 7th, your partner as the world sees them) in angles or trines from each other give amity; in the 6th, 8th or 12th, enmity (BPHS 29.30 to 37). A strong 5th to 7th link with a broken Upapada means a real romance and a marriage not built to hold. Find yours with the free Upapada Lagna tool and my Upapada guide.
Will your parents agree to a love marriage?
Parashara judges the father from the 9th house (BPHS 20.3 to 25) and the mother from the 4th (BPHS 11.5). He names the arudha of the 9th the Pitru Pada (father's) and of the 4th the Matru Pada (mother's) (BPHS 29.1 to 3).
Count from your Arudha Lagna to the arudha of your 9th house for your father and of your 4th house for your mother, exactly as for a spouse (BPHS 29.30 to 37). The free Arudha Lagna tool gives your starting point; Supastro computes all twelve arudhas in your full chart. One more test: your rising sign's lord in the 9th with the 6th lord gives enmity between father and child (BPHS 20.11).
| Your father's or mother's arudha, counted from your Arudha Lagna | What the verse gives | What it means for their yes |
|---|---|---|
| 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th | Amity (BPHS 29.30 to 37) | They are on your side of the table. The fight is shorter than you fear |
| 5th or 9th | Amity (BPHS 29.30 to 37) | Persuasion works. Bring facts, not ultimatums |
| 2nd, 3rd or 11th | The verse is silent | Neither ally nor enemy. Judge by the strength of your 9th and 4th lords |
| 6th, 8th or 12th | Mutual enmity, which the verse calls certain (BPHS 29.30 to 37) | Expect a real fight. Hard is not no: the Upapada still decides the marriage |
Does Rahu in the 7th mean an intercaste love marriage?
No verse says so. What exists: Uttara Kalamrita makes Rahu the significator of people outside the four traditional castes and of foreign lands (chapter 5), and Phaladeepika gives Rahu in the 7th separation from the beloved and a self-willed nature (8.25 to 26). My reading: Rahu on your 7th, your 7th lord or Venus points to a partner from outside your family's world and a pull that does not ask permission.
Same for Venus with Mars. Venus rules love affairs (Phaladeepika 15.16), but Venus in a sign or division of Mars or Saturn, or aspected by them, gives liaisons with other people's partners (Phaladeepika 10.4). The one verse in our library promising a couple will love each other dearly is about their Moon signs sitting 7th from each other (Prasna Marga 21.16).
Is Nadi dosha a reason for your parents to say no?
Not on its own. Nadi is 8 of the 36 points in the Ashtakoota table (the Moon to Moon matching), scored on the two birth stars, or nakshatras. It is not in Parashara. The one matching chapter in our library lists 23 items of agreement without naming Nadi, and calls the Moon sign, its lord and three other checks the five that matter most (Prasna Marga 21.63 to 69).
Supastro's matching code cancels a Nadi clash for the same birth star in different Moon signs, the same birth star in different quarters (padas), or the same Moon sign with different birth stars. In our free compatibility check the 36 points are one layer of eight, 10 of 100 weight points, beside the birth chart, Upapada and Darapada, the Navamsa (the D9, Parashara's chart for the spouse, BPHS 7.1 to 8), bindu scores, Manglik (the Mars check), dasha timing and planet links. An uncancelled Nadi stops the verdict at good; it never decides alone. My kundli matching apps comparison shows which apps stop at 36 points.
When does the marriage actually happen?
In a period the 7th controls: the dasha (planetary period) of a planet in the 7th, aspecting it or ruling it (Phaladeepika 10.13), when Jupiter crosses a sign in trine to the sign or Navamsa of the 7th lord (10.14). Our free Love Timing tool opens a window only when your major and sub-period lords are both tied to marriage and Jupiter and Saturn both touch your 7th or its lord. See when will I get married and how to predict marriage.
What else has to be computed before this becomes a prediction?
| Layer | What I compute | How it can change the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Birth time and rising sign | Exact rising degree, which signs fall in your 5th, 7th, 9th and 4th | A wrong time swaps your lords and every row above |
| D1 and D9 | 5th and 7th lords, Venus and the 7th house of the Navamsa | A link in the birth chart that the Navamsa denies usually follows the Navamsa |
| Strength and dignity | Shadbala (six-source strength) of both lords and Venus; exaltation, debilitation, distance from the Sun | A weak lord shows the link and cannot deliver it |
| Upapada and its 2nd | Sign, lord, occupants and aspects | Decides whether the marriage holds |
| Arudhas | Arudha Lagna to Darapada, and to the arudhas of the 9th and 4th | Amity or friction with the partner and with each parent |
| D12 | The parents' chart (BPHS 7.1 to 8) | Confirms or softens what the 9th and 4th show |
| Ashtakavarga | Bindus in your 7th; Venus's own table | Low bindus: the house struggles to deliver |
| Dasha and transits | Vimshottari to four levels with a Yogini cross-check; Jupiter and Saturn on the 7th | When it happens, if it happens |
| Both charts | Ashtakoota with Nadi and Bhakoot cancellations, Manglik, each person's Upapada and Navamsa | A marriage is two charts, never one |
Frequently asked questions
Can my kundli tell if I will have a love or arranged marriage?
Not as a label. It shows whether your 5th lord (romance) links to your 7th lord (marriage), whether your Upapada supports a lasting marriage, and whether your parents' arudhas sit friendly to your Arudha Lagna.
Is the 5th lord in the 7th house a love marriage yoga?
No classical text calls it one. Parashara gives it honour and children (BPHS 24.55); Mantreswara gives it loss of the spouse (Phaladeepika 10.2).
Which house shows parents' approval of marriage?
The 9th for the father (BPHS 20.3 to 25), the 4th for the mother (BPHS 11.5). From your Arudha Lagna, their arudhas in angles or trines mean amity; in the 6th, 8th or 12th, enmity (BPHS 29.30 to 37).
Does Rahu in the 7th house give an intercaste marriage?
No classical verse says that. Rahu signifies people outside the traditional castes (Uttara Kalamrita, chapter 5), and in the 7th it gives separation from the beloved (Phaladeepika 8.25 to 26). An unconventional pull, not a promised marriage.
Is Nadi dosha cancelled if we have the same Moon sign?
In Supastro's matching, yes, when your birth stars differ. Prasna Marga calls that pairing good, with sons and grandsons (21.16).
Can a love marriage calculator by date of birth be trusted?
No. A date without the time cannot fix your rising sign, so it cannot know your 5th lord, 7th lord or Upapada. At best it reads your Moon sign: one placement, no verdict.
