How Common Is Each Dosha? A Data-Driven Census of 60,000 Kundlis
I cast 60,000 random Indian births with our chart engine and counted every popular dosha rule. Manglik by the popular rule: 88%. By Parashara's verse: 42%. Kaal Sarp: 8%. Pitru: 17%. Sade Sati right now: 25%.

What is data-driven Vedic astrology?
Data-driven Jyotish means two things: every verdict comes from computed numbers, and every rule is measured before it is used on you.
The inputs are your date, time and place of birth. From them the engine computes where each graha (planet) stood in the sidereal zodiac, which sign was rising in the east (your ascendant, or Lagna), and which of the twelve houses, the chart's slices of life, each graha falls in. A rule turns those numbers into a verdict. Manglik by the verse is one line of logic: Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant, with no benefic joining or aspecting it. Yes or no.
Why the chart is arithmetic is in Vedic astrology is pure math; how our engine computes before any AI writes is in Math decides, AI explains. Here I do what most astrologers skip: run each dosha rule over thousands of births and count how many it flags. That base rate tells you whether a dosha marks a few people or half the room.
How did I count the doshas?
- 60,000 random birth moments, any minute from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 2005, drawn with a fixed seed, so the run repeats.
- Six cities, 10,000 births each: New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad. They agree within 1.2 points on every Manglik figure.
- One engine: the chart behind our free tools (sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses) and the app's own dosha rules.
- Two readings where they differ: the popular rule, and the verse's, as our verse database records it.
- One date for Sade Sati and running periods: 11 September 2026.
How common is each dosha?
Find your dosha below, and read the fourth column before the number.
| Dosha | What the rule says, in plain words | Share of births flagged | Classical verse or later custom | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manglik, popular rule | Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the ascendant, the Moon or Venus (any one) | 87.9% | Later custom | 2nd house and Moon and Venus counts: no canonical text |
| Manglik, six houses from the ascendant | Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the ascendant only | 50.1% | Later custom (the 2nd house) | South Indian dhane vyaye verse, in no canonical text |
| Manglik, the verse | Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the ascendant | 41.8% | Classical verse | BPHS 80.47 (Sanskrit lagne = the 1st house) |
| Grahan | The Sun or the Moon in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu | 31.0% | Later custom | Texts treat birth during an eclipse instead (BPHS 91.1 to 14) |
| Sade Sati, on 11 Sep 2026 | Saturn passing the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign or the sign after it | 24.8% | Transit in the verse; the name is later | Phaladeepika 26.22 to 23 |
| Manglik, verse after its own condition | As the verse, and no benefic (Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon, Mercury free of malefics) joins or aspects Mars | 22.3% | Classical verse | BPHS 80.47; benefics, BPHS 3.11 |
| Gandmool, whole star | The Moon anywhere in Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula or Revati | 22.2% | Classical, but judged quarter by quarter | Uttara Kalamrita (pp. 180 to 181 in our edition) |
| Guru-Chandal | Jupiter in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu | 17.8% | Later custom | No verse names it a dosha |
| Angarak | Mars in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu | 17.1% | Later custom | No verse names it a dosha |
| Pitru (also sold as the Sun's Grahan) | The Sun in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu | 16.8% | Later custom | BPHS 83.20 to 30 is a different, 5th-house rule |
| Kaal Sarp | All seven planets, the Sun to Saturn, on one side of the Rahu and Ketu axis | 7.7% | Later custom | No verse in seven texts searched |
| Shrapit | Saturn in the same sign as Rahu | 5.8% | Later custom | No verse names it a dosha |
| Gandmool, junction quarter | The Moon in the quarter of those stars that touches a water to fire sign seam | 5.5% | Commentary | Uttara Kalamrita, translator's notes |
| Kemadruma, the verse | None of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn with the Moon, in the sign either side of it, or in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house | 4.7% | Classical verse | BPHS 37.11 to 13 |
| Gandanta, the verse | The Moon within two ghatikas (48 minutes of its motion) of a water to fire seam | 0.8% | Classical verse | BPHS 92.3 |
| Sarpa yoga, the verse | Malefic planets alone holding the angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) | 0.2% | Classical verse | BPHS 35.8 |
Look where the verses sit. Every rule the texts give, read with its own conditions, flags under one birth in four. The big numbers come from later additions: an extra house and extra counting points for Manglik, and node pairings no verse calls a dosha.
My test for every page: a rule that flags most people cannot be a rare affliction, and a page that sells a fix for it is a sales page. Supastro sells no gemstones and no paid pujas.
How common is Manglik dosha, and is Manglik bad?
About 4 in 10 people are Manglik by the verse, about 2 in 10 after the verse's own condition, and close to 9 in 10 by the popular rule. Parashara gives Mars in the 12th, 4th, 7th or 8th "from Lagn, without aspect by, or association with any benefic" (BPHS 80.47). The Sanskrit opens lagne, in the 1st house, so the 1st counts too. When both partners have it, "the Yog ceases to have any effect" (BPHS 80.48 to 49).

The 2nd house and the Moon and Venus counts are later custom; no canonical text in our library gives them. Is Manglik bad? By the verse it is one marriage factor, not a curse. Before calling it, a reading must check the house and where it was counted from, any benefic on Mars, Mars's strength (Shadbala, its six-part score), your partner's chart, and timing: a yoga acts in its own planets' periods (BPHS 33.94 to 99). On 11 September 2026 only 2.5% of the births I cast are Manglik by the verse, uncancelled, and running a Mars major period or sub-period. See our Mangal Dosha page and the best free Manglik checkers.
How common is Kaal Sarp dosh, and is it bad?
Kaal Sarp flags about 8 births in 100, and no classical text gives it. The rule: all seven planets on one side of the axis between Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes. Our verse database searched seven texts, BPHS and Saravali included: no verse. The only Sarpa in the texts is another yoga, malefics holding the angular houses (BPHS 35.8): 0.2%.
Is it bad? It is a modern label; I read what is real underneath: the nodal axis, its houses, the nodes' periods. Our engine softens it when Jupiter sits in an angle or trine, itself a custom: 3.9% remain. Only 1.5% have it unsoftened with a Rahu or Ketu period running on 11 September 2026. More on our Kaal Sarp page.
How common is Pitru dosh?
About 1 birth in 6, and that is geometry. The modern rule is the Sun in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu. The nodes always hold 2 of the 12 signs, so the Sun lands with one about one time in six: 16.8% here. No verse makes it a dosha; BPHS's curse of the father (83.20 to 30) is a 5th-house rule about children. The same pattern is also sold as the Sun's Grahan dosha, one thing counted twice. Jupiter's aspect softens it in our engine (13.7% remain); 3.9% have it with a Sun or node period running on 11 September 2026. Try our free Pitru Dosha check.

How many people have Sade Sati right now?
One in four. Sade Sati is Saturn passing the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign and the sign after it. On 11 September 2026 Saturn is in Pisces, so everyone with the Moon in Aquarius, Pisces or Aries is in it: 24.8%. Over a life it is universal: 98% meet it three times in their first 80 years, counting one running at birth. Phaladeepika (26.22 to 23) gives Saturn's transit results house by house from the Moon sign; the name and the single seven-and-a-half-year block are later. Read it with your running dasha (planetary period). More: our Sade Sati page and the best free Sade Sati calculators.
What about Guru-Chandal, Angarak, Shrapit, Grahan and Gandmool?
The node pairs follow the same geometry: Jupiter with a node 17.8%, Mars with a node 17.1%, the Sun or Moon with one 31.0%. Saturn with Rahu reads 5.8%; in those 26 years the pair shared a sign less than usual. No verse names any of them a dosha. They are conjunctions, judged by sign, strength and period.
Gandmool depends on how tightly you read it: the Moon anywhere in the six junction stars, 22.2% (Uttara Kalamrita judges them quarter by quarter); in the quarter touching the seam, 5.5%; within BPHS 92.3's Gandanta, two ghatikas (24 minutes each) either side of the seam, 0.8%. See our Gandmool guide.
Frequently asked questions
How rare is Manglik dosha?
Not rare: 42% of births by Parashara's verse, 22% after its benefic condition, 88% by the popular three-point rule.
Is Manglik bad for marriage?
Not on its own. It is one marriage factor; both partners having it cancels it (BPHS 80.48 to 49), and it acts in Mars's periods.
Is Kaal Sarp dosh bad?
A modern label with no classical verse. Read the nodal axis and the nodes' periods; only 1.5% have it unsoftened and running on 11 September 2026.
How many people have Sade Sati at a time?
About a quarter. On 11 September 2026, everyone with the Moon in Aquarius, Pisces or Aries: 24.8%. Almost everyone meets it three times by 80.
Does a common dosha need a paid remedy?
No. No verse in our library gives Kaal Sarp or the Sun-with-node Pitru rule at all, and Manglik's verse names no remedy. Supastro's remedies are free mantras and home practices.
What is data-driven astrology?
Jyotish where every verdict comes from computed chart values and every rule is first measured over many births.
