Should I Quit My Job to Start a Business? What Your Birth Chart Says (and When)
A founder and Jyotishi on the startup question: 7th house versus 6th, the 10th lord in your D10, Rahu, Mars, Saturn, and the dasha that decides when, not if.

You have written the resignation email. Possibly more than once. It sits in drafts while you redo the maths at midnight and scroll through other people's launch posts.
I run a company and I read charts. So you get both halves of the answer from me: what the chart can tell you, and the part it will never decide for you.
Is my chart built for a business or for a job?
This is the first thing I look at, and it is the one most career readings skip. In Jyotish, the 7th house is not only marriage. It is trade, contracts, clients, the public you deal with face to face. It is also the 10th counted from the 10th, which is why classical astrologers read it as the career's own field of action.
The 6th house is service: daily duty, employment, competition, the boss you work for and the rival you beat. A strong 6th is not a weak chart. It is an upachaya house, one that improves with effort, and people with a powerful 6th often do brilliantly inside a structure. They are the ones who get promoted three times while the founder down the road is still pitching.
So compare the two. Which house is stronger: its lord, the planets in it, the aspects on it? Take an example chart: Virgo ascendant. The 7th is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. The 6th is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn. Put Jupiter exalted in Cancer in the 11th and Saturn debilitated in Aries in the 8th, and the chart leans hard toward trade and clients. Swap those strengths and the same person may be happiest running a division for someone else.
What do the 10th lord and the D10 add?
The 10th house and its lord show your karma in the world: the work you are here to do. The question is whether that promise holds up when you zoom in. That is the job of the D10 Dashamsha, the divisional chart for career, power and position.
In the D10 I check four things: the sign and dignity of the birth chart's 10th lord, the D10 ascendant and its lord, the planets in the D10's own 10th, and whether the 7th lord of the birth chart gains or loses strength there. A 10th lord that is exalted in the birth chart and debilitated in the D10 is a promise that struggles to deliver. The reverse is hidden strength. There is more on how this works, and which apps actually read it, in our career guidance comparison.
I also look at the Amatyakaraka, the planet with the second-highest degree, Jaimini's minister of the chart. If it sits in or aspects the 7th, the urge to run your own show is part of your nature, not a mood.

Do I have the nerve for it? The 3rd house, Mars and Rahu
Starting something is a 3rd-house act. The 3rd house is self-effort, initiative, courage, the hand that actually sends the email. A strong 3rd lord, or a malefic like Mars or Saturn placed there, gives the push to start and the thick skin to keep going.
Mars is the nerve to act and to fight for your share. Rahu is appetite: for the unconventional, the foreign, the thing nobody in your family has done. Rahu is comfortable with uncertainty in a way most planets are not, which is why a Rahu mahadasha so often arrives with the urge to break away.
Here is the warning. Rahu without Saturn launches five ideas in a year and finishes none. Mars without Saturn burns hot and quits in month four. Appetite is not the same as staying power.
Will it pay, and can I last? The 11th house and Saturn
The 11th house is gains: income, network, the people who will actually pay you. When the 11th lord connects with the 7th or 10th lord, by conjunction, exchange or aspect, business income has a channel. When the 11th is empty and its lord sits in the 12th, money can come and go in the same month.
Then Saturn. I have come to believe a business is mostly a Saturn project. The launch is Mars and Rahu. The next three years are Saturn: invoices, hiring, repetition, months where nothing visible happens. A Saturn with good dignity, or with high strength in Shadbala, can do the dull work. A weak Saturn needs a partner who can.
Not if, but when: which dasha and transits open the window?
This is where most people go wrong. They read a strong 7th house and resign the next Monday. But the birth chart is the promise; the dasha is the delivery date.
The periods that most often bring a clean start are the mahadasha or antardasha of the 7th, 10th, 11th or 3rd lord, or of Rahu when Rahu is well placed. The sub-period matters as much as the major one. Rahu-Jupiter and Rahu-Saturn are both Rahu, and they feel nothing alike. You can see your own sequence, with exact dates, in the free Dasha Timeline.
Then the transits. I look for double transit: Jupiter and Saturn both influencing your 10th or 7th house, from the ascendant or from the Moon. A few dates that matter right now:
- Jupiter enters Leo on 31 October 2026, turns retrograde on 13 December, slips back into Cancer on 25 January 2027 and returns to Leo on 26 June 2027. If Leo is your 10th (Scorpio ascendant) or your 7th (Aquarius ascendant), the late-2026 stay is a preview; mid-2027 is the real opening.
- Rahu moves from Aquarius into Capricorn on 5 December 2026 (mean node). If Capricorn is your 7th, 10th or 11th, the appetite to go independent may get louder from then.
- Saturn stays in Pisces until it enters Aries on 3 June 2027. Saturn in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from your Moon is the classic supportive placement for hard, slow work.
Yes, not yet, or not this way?
After the checks, I sort the answer into one of three boxes. Very few charts land in a flat no.
| Factor | It's a yes | Not yet | Not this way |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7th vs 6th house | 7th clearly stronger | Both strong; dasha favours the 6th | Strong 6th, weak or afflicted 7th |
| 10th lord in D10 | Confirmed or stronger | Weaker now, other factors good | Weak in both charts |
| 3rd, Mars, Rahu | Strong and steady | Strong but restless | Rahu loud, Saturn weak |
| 11th and Saturn | 11th lord tied to 7th or 10th; Saturn dignified | Gains promised later in the dasha | Gains through salary only |
| Running dasha | 7th, 10th, 11th or 3rd lord | 8th or 12th lord period | Long 6th lord period ahead |
| Money runway | Counted, with a stop date | Not counted yet | Depends on a partner you are unsure of |

"Not this way" is the box people skip, and it is often the most useful. A strong 6th with a decent 7th might mean a side business while employed, a consulting practice, or owning a product line inside a company. An afflicted 7th might mean go solo rather than take a 50/50 partner.
What the chart can't tell you about money
I believe this as firmly as anything in Jyotish: runway is a number, not a feeling. A good dasha cannot pay rent. Before you resign, count what you spend in a month, count what you have, divide, and write down the date on which you will stop or change course if it is not working. Do it on paper, before the excitement does it for you.
Astrology shows the window. It does not show your bank balance, your market or whether your product is any good. Use it to choose when and how, not to replace a plan. And talk to an accountant before you talk to your manager.
For a decision this size I would rather you did not trust one voice, including mine. That is why we built the Council: a Dasha Timer, a Chart Analyst and a Karma Reader argue your question, a Verifier tries to break their case, and a Chief keeps any disagreement visible in the final answer.
Frequently asked questions
Can astrology tell me if my business will succeed?
It can show whether your chart favours business over service, which periods support a launch, and where the strain will come from. It cannot judge your product, your market or your money. Use it for timing and shape, not as a guarantee.
Which house shows business in Vedic astrology?
The 7th house shows business, trade and partners; the 10th shows career and status; the 11th shows gains. The 6th shows employment and service. Read all four together, then confirm with the D10.
Is Rahu mahadasha good for starting a business?
It often brings the urge and the nerve. Whether it brings success depends on where Rahu sits, its dispositor, and whether Saturn is strong enough to carry the slow years. The antardasha within Rahu matters as much as Rahu itself.
Which dasha is best for starting a business?
Periods of the 7th, 10th, 11th or 3rd lord, or a well-placed Rahu, are the classic openers, especially with a supportive Jupiter and Saturn transit over the 10th or 7th. Periods of the 8th or 12th lord usually say wait or prepare.
Should I take a business partner if my 7th house is afflicted?
I would be careful. An afflicted 7th lord often shows friction or loss through partners. Many people with this placement do better as sole owners with clear contracts, or by delaying a partnership until a better dasha.
