# Step 4: Shadbala, Can a Planet Deliver?

How to read Shadbala in a Vedic birth chart: the six sources of planetary strength, why placement without strength is a rumour, and how to weigh it.

Dignity told you whether a planet is willing. Shadbala tells you whether it is able. It is the classical six-fold measure of planetary strength, and it is the layer most shallow readings skip entirely.

A planet in a wonderful house still delivers nothing if it is weak, combust, or badly placed in the divisional charts. Shadbala turns strength from a guess into a number you can actually weigh.

## What this step reads

At this step you score each planet across the six sources of strength and read the total.

## How to do it

1. Score each planet across the six components and sum them.
2. Sort planets into strong, moderate and weak tiers.
3. Never promise a result from a planet that is weak, however well placed.
4. Weigh strength together with the dignity you read at step three.

## Where it sits in the sequence

Strength comes right after dignity because the two together decide whether a placement is real. Only once you know a planet is willing and able should you start reading the combinations it forms.
