Birth Time Rectification in Vedic Astrology: Methods and Steps
How to rectify a birth time: what changes in your chart for every minute of error (measured on 6,000 births), the classical, event-based and KP methods, and what Supastro's blind test of event-based rectification on 461 documented births found.

Your Lagna is the sign rising in the east at birth; every house counts from it. Why birth is a process I covered in birth time accuracy; this is the repair.
What changes in your chart when the birth time moves a few minutes?
Fine divisional charts break first, then house cusps and dasha dates, the rising sign last. I cast 6,000 random births (1980 to 2005; 1,000 each in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, London) on Supastro's engine and recast each minutes later and earlier.

Columns are clock errors; cells are the share of charts in which that row changes (the last row in days):
- D60 to D7: the rising sign of each divisional chart, cut 60 down to 7 parts per sign: the D9 Navamsa for marriage, the D10 for career, the D60 for the finest karmic detail. Their dip at 60 minutes is the count wrapping back to the same sign; the division itself had changed.
- Bhava Chalit: houses from the exact rising degree; a planet near a house edge crosses within minutes.
- Moon's nakshatra and pada: the birth star and its quarter; the slow Moon holds them.
- Dasha rows: whether a different Vimshottari period runs on 23 September 2026, and how far your current period's start date slides: a median 3.85 days for every minute of error.

The ascendant averages 3.99 minutes a degree, unevenly: at Delhi sidereal Pisces rises in 85 minutes and Cancer in 140; in London, Pisces in 51 and Libra in 171. Latitude barely changed the overall risk (a 15 minute error flipped 12.4% of Indian Lagnas, 13.2% of London's); it changes which signs are fragile.
Which classical methods rectify a birth time?
The texts give sign tests tying the Lagna to other points of the same moment; none names a minute.
- Mandi, Gulika and the Moon. Gulika is the degree rising when Saturn's eighth of the day begins (BPHS 3.66 to 70). The Lagna falls in a trine (1st, 5th or 9th) from where the lord of Mandi's sign sits, or from Gulika's navamsa; through the Moon when it is strong (Phaladeepika 3.16). Uttara Kalamrita (1.5 to 6) counts from the Moon or Mandi themselves and adds the 7th.
- Pranapada, a point from the Sun and the birth time, marks an auspicious birth when it falls 2nd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th or 11th from the Lagna (BPHS 3.71 to 74). Astrologers use it as a time check; the verse does not.
- Birth star from the clock. Vighatis (24 second units) since sunrise, times four, divided by nine, the remainder counted from Ashvini, Magha or Mula, must give the Moon's nakshatra (Uttara Kalamrita 1.5).
- Nisheka, the conception chart. BPHS 4.25 to 30 works back from the Lagna to conception; Brihat Jataka 4.21 works forward to birth. Neither is a correction rule; pre-natal epoch methods are modern practice.
- Kunda and Tattva (the ascendant times 81 against the Moon's star; five element slots of the day against the child's sex) are later practice, not in our library.
- Appearance follows the lord of the rising navamsa or the strongest planet (Brihat Jataka 5.23; Phaladeepika 16.1). It separates two Lagnas, never two minutes.
How does event-based rectification work?
Each candidate time must put your dated turning points in dasha periods whose lords govern them: house and land in the 4th lord's period, children in the 5th lord's, honours in the 10th lord's (BPHS 48.2 to 8). Saturn and Jupiter transits are a second check, from practice. The limit is the dasha clock: periods last months or years, and a 30 minute shift changes the antardasha running on a given date in only 18.4% of charts. Events cannot find a lost half hour, and in our blind test they could not separate times a few minutes apart either.
What is the KP ruling planets method?
A Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) technique, not Parashari and not in our classical library. The astrologer notes the ruling planets at the moment of judgment (lords of the weekday, the Moon's sign and star, the rising sign and star) and picks the minute when the birth Lagna's sign, star and sub lords are all among them. Supastro does not run KP.
What did Supastro's own blind test find?
I built event-based rectification into Supastro, then tested it blind on 461 people whose birth times are on record. Each started a few minutes from the documented time, and every answer was frozen before the real times were opened.
| Method | Within 5 min of the real time | When it moved the time |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the recorded time | 301 of 461 | never moves |
| Match life events to dashas | 298 of 461 | 12 closer, 27 further |
| Match life events to transits | 297 of 461 | 53 closer, 70 further |

Neither way of moving the time beat keeping it, so Supastro stopped selling rectification. What it offers instead is free: the rising-sign windows for your date and place, exact astronomy checked on 300 documented births. Choosing a window is for your records, or an astrologer who knows your life.
How do you get the most accurate recorded time before rectifying?
- Best record first: hospital register, then birth certificate, then family memory, and note any rounding to a quarter hour.
- Use the first breath, usually the first cry, not the cutting of the cord.
- Check war time and daylight saving for that date; a missed offset moves the chart an hour (daylight saving and your chart). Supastro's rising-sign windows apply the offset in force at your birth date and place.
- Date your events: marriage, first job, each child's birth, each parent's death, moves, accidents, each to the month at least.
Then cast the chart on the free kundli: a Lagna in its sign's first or last degree needs rectifying first.
Frequently asked questions
Can a birth time be rectified with no time at all?
Only to a window: the 85 to 140 minutes one Lagna rises at Delhi's latitude. Inside it, life events could not pick the minute in our blind test; only a record can.
How accurate is birth time rectification?
As accurate as your starting time and your event dates. Dasha periods last months, so events cannot separate two times 30 minutes apart; the antardasha row in the table shows why.
Is there a free birth time rectification calculator?
Supastro no longer sells one. Its rising-sign windows are free with an account and show which Lagnas your date allows.
Is KP better than Parashari for birth time rectification?
A different school, not a sharper verse. Supastro runs Parashari rules on Lahiri, so I will not rank KP against it.
Can AI rectify my birth time?
AI can read your story; it must not do the arithmetic. Supastro ran the arithmetic as fixed code against documented births, and it did not beat the recorded time, so no AI layer on top can rescue it.
How many life events do I need for rectification?
More events do not fix it: in our tests the error stayed flat from two events to eight. Fix the record first.
