Best Apps to Learn Vedic Astrology in 2026: Courses and Books Ranked

Disclosure: Supastro publishes this guide and runs one of the options. Facts about the others come from their own pages or Google Play India listings; I did not sign up or pay. Figures last checked on 2 November 2026. Nobody paid to be listed; no star ratings from us.

How do you start learning Vedic astrology?

Learn what is computed first, then read in the order a chart is judged, and test every idea on your own chart the day you learn it. That is Parashara's rule, not mine: he closes his text by saying only a person who knows "time and the positions of Grahas and Nakshatras" can understand it (BPHS 97.5 to 6). Grahas are the nine planets of Jyotish; nakshatras are the 27 star segments the Moon moves through.

Most beginners do it backwards: they memorise what Venus in the 7th house means, then watch it fail in a real chart. A placement says nothing until you know its sign, dignity, strength, divisional charts and running period. Learn those layers in that order.

What is in Supastro's free library?

The library holds 219 published articles in nine sections, all free to read without an account. 45 were added or edited in the last 30 days, not counting automated batch edits. 68 articles name Parashara's text and 41 name Phaladeepika, so you can check claims against the books.

What is the learning path through the library?

Twelve steps, one a week. Each row is one idea, the page that teaches it and the free tool that computes it on your chart. Do not jump to dashas, the planetary periods that time events, before step 6: a period delivers in proportion to its planet's strength (BPHS 47.3 to 4).

Ratings are Google Play India, seen when this page was last checked. Not ranked: Sri Jagannath Center's Sohamsa courses (sohamsa.com would not load for us; the course page we could open showed 2016 admissions), Udemy (blocked our checks), Coursera (no Vedic astrology course in its search) and Reddit (we could not open r/vedicastrology).

Why does Supastro rank first, and where do the others win?

It is free, with no login to read. It is ordered: the Chart Reading steps and Guides follow the sequence a Jyotishi uses. And it is checkable: the free kundli computes the layers the articles teach (sidereal positions, Rashi and Navamsa charts, Shadbala, Ashtakavarga, dashas), so you test each idea on your own chart, not a textbook example. Visitors get three new charts a day without an account.

Rao's textbook is the best free book: six parts covering chart analysis, dashas, transits, annual charts, special topics and worked examples. His own preface says it is mainly for intermediate students and that he has refined several calculations since. Jagannatha Hora, his free software, runs on Windows only.

ICAS and Bhavan are the classroom routes. ICAS teaches Jyotish Praveena in Hindi, English, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu or Marathi, with exams every June and December. You pay and wait for an intake, but a teacher corrects your mistakes.

Which classical book should you read first?

BPHS (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra), and not cover to cover. It is the root text, 97 chapters in our edition. It opens by dividing Jyotish into Hora, Ganita and Samhita, and ranks Hora, the reading of birth charts, highest (BPHS 1.1 to 4). Read it in the order of the path: planets (ch. 3), signs (ch. 4), houses (ch. 11 to 23), divisional charts (ch. 6 and 7), strength (ch. 27), karakas (ch. 32), dashas (ch. 46 onward), Ashtakavarga (ch. 66 to 72).

Second, Phaladeepika: Mantreswara presents it as a clear digest of the teaching of Atri, Parashara and others (Phaladeepika 1.2), so it cross-checks what BPHS taught you. Third, Brihat Jataka: Varahamihira wrote it to be short but complete, for students who had given up on bigger works (Brihat Jataka 1.2), though its old English is dense. Jaimini's sutras can wait: BPHS already gives the soul planet (BPHS 32.3 to 8), the arudhas (ch. 29) and Chara dasha (ch. 50).

How long does it take to learn Vedic astrology?

Twelve weeks for the foundation, one year to read a chart competently, several years before your predictions deserve trust. The schools agree on the middle number: ICAS's basic course and Bhavan Delhi's first course each take one year, and Bhavan Bengaluru's full course runs three. Speed comes from charts, not hours: run every lesson on your own chart, then on five people whose lives you know.

Where does Supastro fall short as a teacher?

  • English only. AstroSage, Drik Panchang, ICAS and Bhavan teach in Hindi.
  • No video, no live classes. Text and tools only.
  • No exams or certificate. If you need a credential, go to ICAS or Bhavan.
  • Lahiri only, no KP. Lahiri is our one zodiac setting; KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) is a separate system, and AstroSage teaches it.
  • The ten Chart Reading step pages are short. The depth sits in the Guides they point to.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn Vedic astrology online for free?

Yes. Supastro's library, Rao's textbook, BPHS verse by verse and AstroSage's lessons all cost nothing. What free options lack is a teacher who corrects you; ICAS and Bhavan charge for that.

What is the best app to learn Vedic astrology?

For self-study, Supastro, because each lesson has a free tool that computes it on your chart. On Google Play, the AstroSage Kundli app lists text and video tutorials inside a kundli app with ads. For apps that read your chart rather than teach, see the best astrology apps for beginners.

Is there a good free Vedic astrology PDF?

Yes: Rao's Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach, free from his own site, 515 pages. Saptarishis magazine back issues are free PDFs too. Be careful with free BPHS PDFs: many are scans of copyrighted modern translations.

Do I need Sanskrit to learn Jyotish?

No. You need the terms (Lagna, bhava, graha, nakshatra, dasha), not the grammar. When an English rendering looks doubtful, the verse-by-verse BPHS site shows each Sanskrit word with its meaning.

Is Reddit good for learning Vedic astrology?

For questions, yes. As a syllabus, no: a forum gives answers in no order, from people whose method you cannot see. Ask there once you can read your own chart. I could not open r/vedicastrology when I checked, so I quote no reading list from it.

Do I need to be good at maths?

No. Software does the arithmetic. You need to understand what was computed: the sign and degree of each planet, the Moon's nakshatra, and the birth time everything hangs on.
