# Step 7: Arudha Padas, Perception Versus Reality

How to read the Arudha padas in a Vedic birth chart: the Arudha Lagna, the Upapada, and the gap between how you are perceived and how things truly are.

The seventh layer, also from Jaimini, is the Arudha padas, and it answers a question the rest of the chart does not: how the world perceives you, as opposed to how things truly are. The Arudha Lagna (AL) is the image you project; the Upapada (UL) shows the perception around marriage.

This layer explains the common gap between reality and reputation. Two people with similar charts can be perceived very differently, and the Arudha padas are where that difference is written.

Perception is read after the real chart is understood, because you can only measure the gap between image and reality once you know the reality. That is why the arudhas sit at step seven, not the start.
