# Step 3: Planetary Dignity, Is a Planet Willing?

How to read planetary dignity in a Vedic birth chart: exaltation, debilitation, own sign, friend and enemy signs, and why dignity measures willingness.

With the Lagna and Moon set, you now judge each planet's dignity: whether it sits in a sign where it is comfortable and can behave well. This is the first of two strength questions, and it asks whether a planet is willing.

A planet exalted or in its own sign acts with confidence and integrity; one debilitated or in an enemy sign is uncomfortable and tends to misfire. Dignity does not measure raw power, it measures disposition.

## What this step reads

At this step you place each planet on the dignity scale, from exalted down to debilitated.

## How to do it

1. Note each planet's sign and its dignity there.
2. Flag exalted and own-sign planets as willing and reliable.
3. Flag debilitated and enemy-sign planets as uneasy, and check for cancellation.
4. Carry these dignities forward into the strength step that follows.

## Where it sits in the sequence

Dignity comes before Shadbala because willingness is simpler to read than raw strength, and it frames the fuller strength calculation at step four. A planet can be willing but weak, or able but unwilling, and you need both readings.
